The NFL approved a change to the start of free agency that makes sense. NFL owners at the annual league meeting in Palm Beach, Florida voted to approve a proposal by the Pittsburgh Steelers, expanding the permitted communication with free agents during the legal negotiation window, according to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero.
In the 52-hour window before the start of the league year when free agents officially have their contracts expire, teams will now be able to have phone calls or video calls with the actual players and arrange travel to team facilities, although travel cannot occur before the league year begins.
Previously, teams could only communicate with player agents and could not arrange travel during the negotiation window.
Under the approved change, teams can now speak with players with their agents present via phone or video call. Teams are limited to one call to up to five potential unrestricted free agents.
This will impact things beginning in 2026 as the 2025 league year began in March.
