NFL boasts big ratings for prime time draft
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 23, 2010 10:44 AM ET

NFL fans voted with their remote controls on Thursday night and declared that they approve of the league's decision to move the first round of the draft into prime time.

League spokesman Greg Aiello tweeted Friday morning that draft TV ratings are up 30 percent from last year, when the first round started at 4 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, and up 55 percent from 2008, when the first round started at 3 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.

We haven't yet seen a breakdown of how ESPN and NFL Network fared individually, or a number on the total viewers who tuned in. But suffice to say, the NFL is declaring the first round a success.

Which means you can expect to see the draft in prime time every year going forward.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were a record when you combine ESPN and NFLN coverage.

I bet they destroyed the NBA playoff ratings too.

Mark Cuban was already whining about it earlier in the week, saying the NFL wasn't a good "partner". Like the NFL and NBA are partners or the NFL cares less about the NBA. I personally wish the NBA would go the way of the Dodo bird.

You could put ish rolling of of the top of the tv over the screen and there would be more people watching it on Thurday night, than on Saturday night. It's just the nature of people's viewing habits.

The new format sucks, but I agree it is very likely here to stay for a while.

NFL.com was broadcasting on the Internet for those that were stuck at work (like me). That was a pleasant surprise.

So if you add internet watchers and radio listeners one would imagine the numbers might be superbowl high?
