ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith has been in the news for his ongoing feud with Los Angeles Lakers star forward LeBron James. However, he might have created a different feud altogether after his recent comments on wideout Stefon Diggs catching passes from quarterback Drake Maye in New England.
Smith questioned why Diggs would leave Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud for Maye.
"I'm just wondering about Stefon Diggs. You go from Josh Allen to C.J. Stroud—to Drake Maye," Smith said on ESPN's "First Take." "You sure about that? Are you sure? I just think that's a legitimate question to ask because no matter what you are as a receiver, it don't mean a damn thing if the quarterback can't get you the football.
"And I understand. I'm not up there throwing that kind of shade at Drake Maye, like the brother can't play. That's not what I'm implying here. I'm just saying there's a difference between him and C.J. Stroud and Josh Allen."
NFL fans, particularly Patriots fans, weren't happy with Smith's comments.
Even though Smith clarified by saying he wasn't throwing shade at Maye, his assessment does feel unfair considering Maye has only started in 12 NFL games.
He played for a rookie coach, without a No. 1 receiving target and behind one of the worst offensive lines in football. Yet, even under the worst circumstances as a rookie quarterback, Maye still showed promise and earned a Pro Bowl nod.

Stephen A. Smith wonders why Stefon Diggs came to the #Patriots:

Over the years I’ve cared less and less about Stephen A. Smith, I now couldn’t care less given this whole LeBron/Bronny episode.
But how are you questioning if Drake Maye can get the ball to Stefon Diggs?!pic.twitter.com/ZVlimVOq5B

Stephen A Smith directly calling out Drake Maye.

Why are we dogging Drake Maye who barely played in a horrible offensive system last year? There’s a reason he was the #3 pick in the draft.
Stephen A has had some awful takes this week. https://t.co/3cUkfCFzQE

Is it just me or does this not just obviously show that Stephen A Smith does not watch football, probably watches the big games and good teams play but clearly lacks his football knowledge by trying to knock on Drake Maye

As if Stephen A Smith has watched a lick of Drake Maye lmao. Stefon Diggs saw him in his first start last year against a healthy Texans defense that was pressuring Drake all game and he was still throwing darts https://t.co/VADbl9nlDb

I’m actually a Stephen A fan for the most part but wtf is he talking about? Drake Maye played really good last year. He had the physical tools. https://t.co/191Fiz3y3G

Seeee. This why @stephenasmith needs actual football minds on the show. Drake Maye is nice lmao. And he looked nice with ZERO help. Just say football not your thing. Can’t wait for the retraction. https://t.co/XZi7uDGUEs

Why is SAS acting like Drake Maye wasn’t the 3rd overall pick who didn’t have a good showing with an otherwise atrocious roster and horrid coaching…
Everybody who watched ball watch this man’s talent and SAS acting like he’s https://t.co/OuSgFgpdjv
