The Atlanta Falcons are putting their money where their mouth is regarding quarterback Kirk Cousins. Despite rumors suggesting the team would release Cousins before his $10 million roster bonus was due on March 15, the Falcons didn't blink at the deadline.
Now that those around the NFL know Atlanta is serious about keeping the veteran quarterback on the roster, trade inquiries have begun. According to a report from NFL insider Josina Anderson, the Falcons have been receiving calls to gauge their interest in moving Cousins
"Atlanta has been getting calls,” a source told Anderson, who went on to reveal the potential cost of acquiring Cousins. "I heard talk of a 3rd-round pick being potentially actionable."
Cousins, 36, showed he could still play last season before losing his job due to arguably the worst five-game stretch of his NFL career. The Falcons went with Michael Penix Jr. for the final three games of the season and don't plan on going back to Cousins.
The veteran signal-caller said after the season that he suffered an injury during the team's Week 10 loss to the New Orleans Saints. While he didn't mention it at the time -- aside from appearing on the Week 11 injury report for one day -- it would explain Cousins' drastic drop in production during the second half of the season.
After throwing 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions over the first nine games, he passed for just one touchdown and nine interceptions over his final five starts. If he's healthy, Cousins could still be a starting-level quarterback for a team next season, which gives him value.
The Falcons would take on a dead cap hit of $37.5 million while clearing $2.5 million in cap space by trading Cousins before June 1. If the team can wait until after June 1, Atlanta could offload his $27.5 million salary and lower his dead cap to just $12.5 million.
Over 13 NFL seasons, Cousins has passed for 42,929 yards, 288 touchdowns and 126 interceptions for a passer rating of 97.4.

Evening Notes: The offseason Carousel continues to churn.
I was just told these two quarterback names came up in recent preliminary* trade inquiries or internal discussions, per a league source: Kirk Cousins and Will Levis.
