I have no problem with blockers jumping over the center.
I think as Cardinals fans you are bias because it seems like Seattle leaps the center and blocks a FG on us twice every season. Because it happens to us so regularly, it would seem like a justifiable rule, but its really not.
I cant think of 1 good reason why it should be outlawed. Every team is on an even competitive playing field. Our players can jump over their center too. You wouldnt be complaining if we blocked a few FGs by doing that.
I think it's the Players Association that is requesting the rule to ban the leap in the name of player safety. It's not hard to envision the "leaper" getting his foot caught, rotating and landing on his head, just as the play goes live, leading to him getting trampled....
And really, you can use the "even playing field" excuse for any play. If both teams can horse-collar tackle, that's competitive balance. Head slaps are fine if both teams can do it.
Horse collar tackles were outlawed directly because of injuries. Not potential injuries, or imagined injuries. Actual injures. T.O., Ryan Williams, Steve Smith sr. I could go on.
Can you name anyone whos been hurt by jumping over the center?
Not yet, but I think that is the NFLPA's point, as it becomes more common, you will see counter behavior that will raise the risks - either to the center or to the jumper.
Or blocking FGs?
Not jumping over the center, but just Bethel coming off the edge? Hes ran into the kicker many times.
could end the guys career.
That should definitely be banned too?
Wow. Never expected to see this much passion over a play that has maybe occurred 10 times in the history of the sport.
Very Trump muslim-ban esque.
PS: this will be happening a LOT this year if a rule is not made. Bet on it.
Well, I remember 2001, very vividly..
