There are some new voices in this week’s draft roundups and there seems to be some more coalescing around the Cleveland Browns needing a quarterback.
Oh joy. Two-thirds of NFL teams seem to need a quarterback. The Browns have needs all over the place, but with many one name creeps through the noise.
On the other end of the spectrum: practicality breaks through with many suggesting a partner in defensive mayhem for Myles Garrett makes sense given his recent signing. Here are some of the latest analyst picks:
Ben Standig of “The Athletic” summarizes Cleveland’s situation perfectly in one paragraph: “The decision likely comes down to the Browns’ panic level at quarterback versus maximizing the Myles Garrett investment with arguably the No. 1 overall prospect,” he writes. “Quarterbacks alter a franchise’s vibe more than any other position, and neither Kenny Pickett, Kirk Cousins nor Russell Wilson is a changemaker.”
In other words: expect the Browns to take Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders with the No. 2 overall pick.
Another tidbit: “Despite his impressive accuracy, some teams see Sanders as a Day 2 selection,” he continues. “That’s not as easy to say when your team doesn’t have an answer at the sport’s most important position. That doesn’t mean drafting him at No. 2 isn’t a reach.”
Yup, he gets it.
Other AFC North picks:
Baltimore Ravens: Donovan Ezeiruaku, defensive end, Boston College.
Cincinnati Bengals: After trading the No. 17 pick to the Los Angeles Chargers for their 2 pick, they take Malaki Starks, safety, Georgia.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Kenneth Grant, defensive tackle, Michigan.
Many Browns fans will appreciate CBS analyst Pete Prisco’s choice for the team more than Sanders – Abdul Carter, defensive end, Penn State.
“They will consider quarterback here, but I think they pass and take an elite edge rusher. Pairing Carter with Myles Garrett will give them bookends for the next five years,” he writes. “That matters in a division with Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow. The Deshaun Watson trade and pay are killing this team.
Other AFC North picks:
Baltimore Ravens: Mike Green, defensive end, Marshall.
Cincinnati Bengals: Derek Harmon, defensive lineman, Oregon.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Jaxson Dart, quarterback, Ole Miss.
Chad Reuter of NFL.com sees the logic in the Browns taking Carter.
“Trading for Kenny Pickett means the Browns could focus on taking the best player available at No. 2 before picking up another quarterback later in the draft,” he writes. “The extension of Myles Garrett does not mean Cleveland will pass on Carter, whose elite talent on the edge would only make the perennial All-Pro better.”
Other AFC North picks:
Baltimore Ravens: Reuter has the Ravens making a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs to No. 31 and still being able to gain the talents of safety Malaki Starks of Georgia.
Cincinnati Bengals: Mykel Williams, defensive end, Georgia.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Omarion Hampton, running back, North Carolina.
PFF’s Josh Liskiewitz’s selection has the benefit of being tainted by faint praise for him. Shedeur Sanders, come on down!
“Sanders may be below average in stature and arm talent compared to NFL quarterbacks,” he writes, “but he plays the game cleanly, takes care of the football and is tough as nails with ice in his veins under pressure.”
Plays the game cleanly? Great.
Baltimore Ravens: Donovan Ezeriuaku, defensive end, Boston College.
Cincinnati Bengals: Kenneth Grant, defensive lineman, Michigan.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Omarion Hampton, running back, North Carolina.
Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA TODAY says the Browns Carter aboard the team to help the recently signed defensive end, Garrett.
“Pairing Garrett with Carter, the draft's pre-eminent disruptive force, would be a sensible way to optimize assets early, with a quarterback still potentially in play later on,” he writes.
Other AFC North picks:
Baltimore Ravens: Donovan Ezeiruaku, outside linebacker, Boston College
Cincinnati Bengals: Shemar Stewart, defensive end, Texas A&M.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Pittsburgh Steelers – Jaxson Dart, quarterback, Mississippi.
