NFL quarterback rankings: Should Drew Brees still make the top 10?

After two weeks of NFL action, there have been impressive performances registered by rookies and old hands alike, while certain stars of the league have faltered. The average level being played at quarterback across the league right now is remarkably high, making this task far from straightforward. The quarterback rankings will be revisited later in the season, reflecting every twist and turn of the tumultuous ride that is the NFL season. But without further ado.. 1. Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) The best player in the league and, scarily, still likely to improve. Mahomes’ ability to conjure plays out of nothing along with the accuracy of his passing just about places him in a league of his own. 2. Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks) Year in, year out, Wilson combines consistency with special moments. But this campaign he has gone to a different level. He is avoiding pressure, scrambling for yards and producing deep passes down the field with pinpoint accuracy. Wilson was the star of the show in week one against Atlanta and again in week two against the Patriots. Currently on course to be the league MVP. 3. Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens) His 2019 season was outrageously good. Jackson’s ability to run and pick up yards is unique in the sense that he does it so well, so often. In week one of the 2020 season, Jackson delivered one of his best passing games, perhaps suggesting he will be an even better all round package this campaign. 4. Deshaun Watson (Houston Texans) A truly special player. Watson, still only 25-years-old, can do everything. He has poise, a great arm and can use his legs when required. The loss of DeAndre Hopkins has reduced his offensive options raising the question: can Watson be as good without his star receiver? 5. Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers) This offseason, Rodgers was written off for the first time in a decade. The Packers quarterback answered emphatically against the Vikings, producing a near-perfect display. He then backed it up against the Lions, once again playing with aggression and conviction. Rodgers’ passing it still right up there with the best. Green Bay has not particularly helped him with receiving talent - bar Davante Adams - but he still produces performances and wins, plenty of wins. 6. Dak Prescott (Dallas Cowboys) This is where the ranking becomes tricky. For me, the top five is straightforward, at least in terms of personnel. Prescott sneaks in at number six. His impressive early form this season gets him the nod. Undoubtedly has the potential to break into the elite quarterback club.
