Statement regarding the Super Bowl halftime show

Statement by NFL Executive Vice President Joe Browne regarding the Super Bowl halftime show:

"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced Halftime show. They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the show. It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."

I agree with the NFL. Although I didn't see it happen (I must have turned away), cheap stunts like that do not belong during the Superbowl halftime show. Many people who watch the Superbowl consider nude material to be offensive and pornographic. It's not like you can't flip channels, get on the web or go to your local newsstand to get porn if you really want it. I don't think it needs to be shoved down the throat of someone that doesn't want nudity to be a part of their viewing. And it is certainly well within the NFL's rights to tell MTV to kiss off and not come back in the future.

They need another statement about the pathetic lipsinc performances by Janet, Diddy and Nelly, WEAK, they didn't try to look convincing. Were the all told to lipsinc or what!?

Kid rock and Justin Timberlake were the only ones singing, blah.

Oh and NFL, "Just say no!(to country)". That truly sucked, atleast Garth gave a performance, that pre-game country singing blew.

/rant off

Great game though!

Can't we get back to some old school NCAA marching bands at halftime? This halftime stuff is getting ridiculous. I didn't see the boob incident (damn!) but even if I had I still would have thought it to be a bit much. This is the event the NFL sells it's game to an audience that doesn't normally watch and this kind of thing shuts doors or potential fans.

Bring back Up With People!!!

Seriously, I'm a pretty liberal guy, but what (I assume) Timberlake and Jackson pre-arranged was totally inappropriate. There were really little kids watching the show, as well as people all over the world (like the Taliban and other ultra-conservative communities), and displays of gross decadence like that aren't going to go far in furthering our cause in those communities.

I believe these kind of shenanigans are indicative of a festering problem within professional sports.

For some reason, every championship must be a spectacle, and everyone invovled (whether a player, or entertainer) must some how make themselves bigger than The Game itself.

Newsflash, without The Game there is nothing!

Trust me, the Taliban was NOT watching the Superbowl. Neither was Al Queda.

Yeah, but it WAS televised in Israel, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, etc., etc. Do you think that a display like yesterday's goes over well in a nation where women are incouraged to not show any skin except their face?

Who cares if some moslem extremists were offended by Janet's *****? Do you think they could possibly hate us worse?

Really the time we start considering their opinion for OUR tv shows is the time the terrorists have already won.

Some thoughts about the show:

"AOL Super Bowl XXXVIII Halftime show produced by MTV"

I bet AOL loved having their named linked with Janets breast!

"With Janet set as a featured performer and more performers and surprise collaborations to follow, the stage has been to set to produce an event that the Super Bowl audience will remember for years to come," said Van Toffler, President, MTV/MTV2.

"There is no bigger spectacle than the Super Bowl," said Janet Jackson. "It's a unique and exciting experience that I have looked forward to for many years."

"The AOL Halftime Show is an important part of the Super Bowl and one of the most highly anticipated entertainment events of the year," said NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "We are pleased that a star like Janet Jackson will join the roster of entertainers who have made the Super Bowl Halftime so special."

 ohh indeed!

:biglaugh:

I can almost see bin ladin hunkered in some rat hole trying to adjust the rabit ears on his T.V. during the halftime show!

I do agree with you that it certainly doesn't help our credibility considering all our excuses for taking Iraq seem to be out the window.

FYI: Janet Jacksons albums are most likely already banned from most muslim countries. They have pretty strict censorship laws.

I did, about 1 minute after the game started.

The boob peek was inappropriate, but CBS approved the idiocy. Why didn't the NFL slam CBS and not MTV? MTV played to their audience...that's their gig. But CBS is the gatekeeper...why aren't they being threatened more severely?

You go after the people who call the shots and make final approvals, not the knuckleheads that crap out the ideas.

This from the network that would not show the MoveOn ad because it was "controversial." Anyone who believes this whole thing was not planned and approved beforehand is naive. I did not find it shocking, stupid is more like it. Even more stupid is such outrage over a breast. The Bud commercials were actually more offensive.

hmmmmm am I to assume to "MTV playing to it's 'audience' " is a valid excuse for that kind of behavior?

which brings up another point that struck me in watching the game:

This is the media event of the year. Commercial time for the superbowl are the highest there is. It has almost become like a new tradition that the big money players (advertising-wise) debut their great new commercials during this game.

So what does it say about where our culture seems to be heading when, by far, the majority of the commercials are not only about beer, projecting the image of "race car driver/stuntman" even a "family" vehicle "with a hemi";
the subject line of most commercials seemingly geared to a mentality level of a 6 year old cartoon with animals talking and everything centered around an over-exaggerated "fantasy/comedic" theme;
and last but certainly not least.....the over-riding subject matter being things like animals blowing ignited farts counterpointing a romantic theme, and all the other ******** and tasteless sexual- type references that predominated most of them ??????????????????????

Dont know if I agree with all that, but the commercials were not very clever this year.

To me the question is:

Why do we see the subject matter of the commercials, that we do?

The first and most obvious answer would seem to me to be:
because that's what sells.
Or at least there are enough people who think that it does, that they invest their advertising money in them.

To me, just as obviously, the target market for the advertisers is the age group ranging somewhere from collegel age to maybe 30-35, and geared to a "party animal", classless mentality.

If people didn't accept this, they wouldn't be putting it on, in the first place.

TV has become such an influential slice of the pie in soooo many peoples life and is one of the things I personally feel is responsible for the present day attention deficit disorder "epidemic".
Brains are getting turned to mush from the "brain-washing" type of presentation perpetrated, especially on commercial networks.

For example....ESPN is one of the worst. It has seemingly become commonly acceptable and the "norm" for not only for the subject matter of the "show" to be secondary to the messages delivered by the commercials. But even the increasingly diminishing time of the "shows subject matter itself" to be even further diminished by neo-commercial "blips" taking up time to bombard us with strobe light-like collages of "what we're going to get to see next." .

Forget about that crap. Just show or telll me what you want to show or tell me, don't waste even more time telling me about what your going to tell or show me with these sense stimulating kaleidoscopic visual collages.

You think that the people can stop them?

No my friend. The Jacksons, all those young sex driven singers (who can't sing by the way)? No, ain't gonna happen. They make to much money, and people have too many investments in this "music/sex industry". You can't stop them !

What was the other statement on this thread? Oh yeah!
That Janet Jackson breast being out (yes it was planned) is a bad showing by our country. That other countries will look down upon this country cause of THAT??! No worries my friends. Our president is all we needed to completely embarrass this nation. Because in a democratic society the PEOPLE HAVE THE VOICE. I mean a president that doesn't even get 50% of the votes in a election can't start a war and drive this country into the ground.........Oh wait.

I don't think a breast is going to shock anyone but Americans. Most other coutnries and cultures are more open about naked bodies, and sex. They actually (shocker) talk to each other, and talk to there kids about sex and sexuality thus taking some of the edge off. And it is the superbowl, not the soccer world cup.

As for ranting about Superbowl commericals? Screw that EVERY commercial is a complete assault on your brain. Yes, I understand that commercials are need to fund the shows we watch. BUT WHY HAVE VOLUMES DIFFERENT ON COMMERCIALS THEN ON THE REGULAR SHOW? It is all about the benjamins men. It is not going to change.

:(

i too agree that the commercials weren't that good this year. I wasn't too thrilled over any of them. Generally there are 1 or 2 but not this year IMO.

??????

They are commercials. I didn't see them, I didn't watch the haftime show.

I was busy eating chicken wings and TALKING to other people. I mean I know superbowl commmercials are "special" but they are stupid commercial advertising the same spit I saw 500 million times during the regular season. Instead of watching commercials I talked to others about draft day and Free Agents.

+ Pabst doesn't advertise and I drink that more than Bud.
