That interview made me feel pretty good again after the NY Times cover story was a little bit disturbing considering his mother.
Suns.com: How are you enjoying your time off this summer?
Amaré Stoudemire: It’s going pretty good. I went to L.A. and worked out for a little bit. I’m enjoying myself.
Suns.com: You got a chance to go back home to Orlando, too, didn't you?
Stoudemire: Yeah. That was great. I got a chance to see a lot of my old friends. They’re doing good in college right now. I enjoyed myself.
Suns.com: How is the rehab going after your toe surgery?
Stoudemire: My toe is doing a lot better. It’s going to take another two and a half weeks for it to totally heal, though. Right now it’s still a little achy but I’ll be back.
Suns.com: Are there things can you still work on while rehabbing?
Stoudemire: I can work on my upper body, my abdominal muscles, but that’s about it.
Suns.com: You also had LASIK surgery this summer at the Schwartz Laser Eye Center, the official laser center of the Suns. How did that go?
Stoudemire: It went pretty good. My left eye was 20-400 and now it’s 20-20, so actually it went great! I was very nervous going in, but it wasn’t painful at all. I really notice the difference now.
Suns.com: Speaking of vision, what are you focussing on now, in terms of improving your game?
Stoudemire: Just working on the fundamentals of the game, ball handling skills, the IQ of the game, my jump shot. That’s about it for right now.
Suns.com: What were your thoughts on last month’s draft?
Stoudemire: I think it was a great draft for us. We got two great guys that can come in and produce, so it’s going to be pretty exciting. I was kind of surprised. I saw highlights during the draft and those guys looked pretty good. I was shocked.
Suns.com: We hear you're going to travel with the guys to Salt Lake City for the Rocky Mountain ***** later this month.
Stoudemire: Yeah. I’m just going to go up there and play a leader role, try to give the guys some advice here and there. But I’m not going to be able to play. I’m kind of upset about that, because the summer leagues give you an opportunity to improve and enjoy the camaraderie. You’ve got a lot of guys going who may not make the team, but are still good players. I’m going to up there and hang out with the guys anyway, so it’s cool.
