Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have confirmed the rumours: they are expecting their first baby.
The announcement was made today by Kidman's publicist, Wendy Day.
“Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban confirmed today that they are expecting a baby,” she said in a statement.
“The couple are thrilled.”
So far, the due date is under wraps.
The 40-year-old actress - who has suffered miscarriages in the past - has publicly declared her longing for a child.
But her representatives attempted to dismiss pregnancy reports last week in Australian, UK and US media as unreliable gossip.
Yesterday, the New York Post reported the actress had pulled out of a major new film to protect “the welfare of her unborn child”.
She was due to begin filming this month on the Stephen Daldry-directed post-World War II drama, The Reader, along with Ralph Fiennes.
It has been a rough first 18 months of marriage for the Oscar-winning actress and her country music star husband, who checked himself into rehab soon after their wedding.
But the pair, who have been relaxing with friends and family in Sydney, have since declared they do not intend to spend more than 12 days apart.
Kidman has two adopted children from her marriage with Cruise: Isabella, 14, and Connor, 12.
She revealed late last year she had lost two babies while married to Cruise. She told the US's Marie Claire magazine she had miscarried at the end of her marriage and had an ectopic pregnancy at the beginning of the marriage, which was “incredibly traumatic”.
But she said she had not given up hope of having a child with country music star Urban: “What will be will be. It's in God's hands,” she said.
The actress had been embroiled in controversy this week over claims Scientologists threatened to blackmail her if she spoke out against the religion, after her marriage ended to Cruise.
Kidman recently finished shooting Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia, with Hugh Jackman, which was filmed in remote locations around the country - including Western Australia's Kununurra and Queensland's Bowen.
Her most recent film, fantasy thriller The Golden Compass, which cost $210 million to make, had a lukewarm reception in the US, but has performed better in Australia. It was at the top of the local box office tally after its Boxing Day opening, and is currently ranked third.
