The recent emergence of Brandon Nimmo underscores something I’ve believed all along, that Mets general manager Sandy Alderson made a huge mistake when he extended Yoenis Cespedes for $110 million over four years after the 2016 season. Even if Nimmo wasn’t developing, Cespedes, 32, was not a card Alderson should have played for a myriad of reasons, with economics being the most significant. The Mets have the reputation of operating on the cheap, and Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Michael Conforto and Nimmo are a handful of pieces they could consider signing to long-term contracts while maintaining a manageable payroll.
