In the final outing of a 12-game home stand, Florida State baseball was upset by Mercer 9-3 on Tuesday.
The No. 4 Seminoles (18-2) couldn't overcome an early six-run deficit to beat Mercer in the last game at Dick Howser Stadium in March.
FSU started Payton Manca and he lasted just one inning. He allowed a two-run home run in the first that gave the Bears an early two-run lead and finished his outing with two strikeouts and three earned runs.
It was a bullpen game for the Seminoles, who used seven relief pitchers over the nine innings.
Mercer scored at least a run in the first three innings, with a pair of two-run home runs blowing the game open early. The Bears lead 6-0 until the sixth, adding one more run in the top half of that inning to make it 7-0.
The Seminoles' offense struggled to make an impact in the game's first five innings as Nathan Cmeyla was the only player to record a hit. FSU found some momentum in the sixth inning with a three-run home run from Max Williams that followed a walk from Gage Harrelson and a single from Alex Lodise.
FSU's momentum didn't last long, and after a wild pitch from Connor Hults scored a run for Mercer, the Seminoles couldn't string together hits to chip into the lead.
Mercer starter Jeb Johnson threw a gem with 5.1 innings pitched, a career-high nine strikeouts and three earned runs, all from the Williams homer. The Seminoles had little answer for the Bears bullpen, going hitless after the Williams homer.
A throwing error in the top of the ninth allowed Mercer to score one more and take the 9-3 lead. A 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning featured a pair of strikeouts.
The 14 total strikeouts were a season-high for the Seminoles, surpassing the 13 strikeouts the team had in the 10-1 win over Lipscomb.
