SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman addressed one of his major concerns with the transfer portal ahead of the 10-day spring window opening on Wednesday.
Appearing on the "See Ball Get Ball" podcast with former ESPN analyst David Pollack, Freeman lamented the “ease of transferring” in the modern era, citing that as “one of the issues more than money” that plague the sport.
“There’s reasons to have the transfer portal and for guys to transfer, but I think right now there’s such ease to transfer when things aren’t going your way,” Freeman said. “The side of transferring when you have a new coaching staff or you want to find a better opportunity to play or you’ve got your degree, all those different things, there’s a lot of pros of the transfer portal.
“But when you look for the transfer portal to find an easier way, that’s where it goes against what I believe college football is for and that’s to help young people continuously be self-sufficient when they’re done.”

As deliberations continue regarding the House settlement and a revenue-sharing agreement that could go into effect by July 1, major college sports programs could soon enter an era of greater transparency in negotiating direct arrangements between school and player.
The murkiness of the current NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) environment led to the recent departure of Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava in what reportedly was a dispute over compensation.
“When you go to the NFL, you sign a contract,” Freeman said, speaking generally. “No matter if you like your role or you like the money you’re making, you have a job to do and you have to do that job. Right now, at times people can leave a situation because they don’t like their role or they don’t like maybe how much money they’re making or they’re uncomfortable.
“That’s not real life. When you leave college, you’re going to have to be self-sufficient and know how to handle whatever is required of you, no matter what the circumstances are. We have to promote that in college athletics: being self-sufficient individuals when you’re done with it.”
Undergraduates at the FBS level can enter the transfer portal from April 16-25 while they shop for a new program by the May 1 deadline for immediate fall eligibility. Graduates can enter the transfer portal at any point during the calendar year but must abide by the same standards for immediate fall eligibility.
