Notre Dame is losing another player to the transfer portal, which shouldn't be a surprise in this era of college basketball. But this one likely will sting for those who have covered or otherwise followed sports in South Bend for the past several years.
J.R. Konieczny, who became St. Joseph's all-time leading scorer before coming to the Irish, has entered the portal. Despite the local ties, his impact on the program was average at best. He even sat out a year, redshirting the 2022-23 season.
During the three seasons he saw game action for the Irish, Konieczny averaged 5.5 points and 3.3 rebounds a game. He played all but two games for the Irish over the past two seasons and made 23 starts, 19 of which came during the 2023-24 season. In nonconference play that season, he reached his career scoring high of 18 points twice, but both instances came during losses:
While it's the right thing to wish Konieczny the best, South Bend will miss him for sure.
