A player hitting for the cycle wasn't something Notre Dame fans were used to seeing before Tuesday's home opener against Butler. The last player to do it was Zak Kutsulis in 2016. That no longer is the case.
As the Irish crushed the Bulldogs, 18-4, in seven innings, junior shortstop Estevan Moreno became the latest player in program history to hit for the cycle. He got each of his hits in consecutive innings starting with a single in the third and ending with a triple in the sixth. Along the way, he drove in two runs, scored four more and also was hit by a pitch.
It was boost Moreno, who has started every game for the 12-6 Irish, badly needed as it's been a rough start to the season for him. Even after this 4-for-4 performance, he still is slashing a mere .192/.302/.425. Hopefully, this game gets him on the right track:
It was a highlight Moreno can carry with him forever regardless of how he does during the rest of his playing career.
