The US Open has been reeling from a series of withdrawals in recent days, including that of reigning men’s champion Rafael Nadal. But today’s news was more encouraging, as world No1 Novak Djokovic confirmed that he will be participating in the tournament in just over a fortnight’s time. Djokovic will thus follow his old rival and near-exact contemporary Andy Murray out to New York, meaning that at least two active slam champions should be involved in the men’s draw. Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic have both previously expressed concerns over the tournament, while Roger Federer – who recently underwent knee surgery – and Juan Martin del Potro are not in tournament shape. Djokovic also confirmed that he will participate in the warm-up event – the Western and Southern Open – which starts in a week’s time at the same venue: Flushing Meadows, New York.
