I almost feel like we need to keep both kickers active as stupid as that sounds. Nugent was money from inside 40. Pretty much every kick dead center. Probably has range to 45-47 yards. I’d much rather have him kicking those than Zane.

but it definitely looks like he can’t kick long and if it comes down to it, we need someone to be able to at least kick it that long.

I feel like I’ve seen teams carry two kickers before. One kickoff specialists and one FG kicker. Maybe we can utilize both that way?

Zane is fine when there is no money in the table. Game winning kick is his kryptonite.

I mean, he kicked the tie points vs Seattle to go to OT and then kicked the winner in OT. And kicked the winner vs Bengals last year.

I believe these are literally the only games he's been asked to kick for the win and made them both.

The only game I can recall he missed a crucial late kick was vs the Pats recently that would have given us 3 point lead before their last drive.

But sure, he sucks in the clutch. Let's can him for a guy that can't kick touchbacks and would struggle over 40 yards.

After missing the winner in OT, gifting the game to Seattle only for Wilson to gift it back to us.

If you want to start using caveats you can say he made it the 1st time.

He did what he did. You can't say he's not clutch when there's evidence to the contrary.

Zane has 2 games for us ever where he's missed more than 1 FG.

Has he had a rough patch the last 3-4 games? Sure.

There's PLENTY of evidence to say he's not clutch. Specifically this season. Kickers don't get the luxury of losing multiple games and continue to survive on a roster, especially at a high price. Well, on other teams they don't.

Which games has he lost exactly?

LOL

What games have you been watching?

He SPECIFICALLY lost us both the Dolphins and Patriot games with missed FGs.

Against the Phish, he would have given us a chance with a tie, and against the Cheaters, we would have straight up won.

And in case you don't believe me:

And that's not counting his other missed FGs that would have changed the complexion of those games he missed them in, especially considering our worst loss has been only by 10pts.

EDIT: Had to confirm before I said anything about it, but Zane missed TWO FGs in the Rams game, which we lost by 10. His first miss was when we were only down by a TD (14-7).

This also doesn't account for how Kliff has to change his plans and go for it when a FG would be more practical because he has NO confidence in the kicker.

Maybe go 1990s Giants and keep both kickers. Remember they kept Brad Deluiso around, just for kickoffs and anything 50+?

I never said he hasn't missed FG's, but it's tough to argue Zane lost us those games. There were a whole bunch of other reasons we lost those games. It's very convenient to say "It's Zane's fault" when Kliff and Kyler were garbage in those games.

The Miami game we had that garbage series from Kliff after a big gain on the throw to Kirk where he basically played for a FG and Murray missed an easy short throw to Kirk to extend the drive. Leaving us with a not automatic for anyone 49 yard FG. And there was still plenty of time on the clock for Miami to kick their own winner even if he made it. Let's ignore the ******* sack fumble scoop and score on Kyler.

The Pats one I agree, he should have made that shorter kick, but again there was some piss poor play calling leading up to it where we could have easily gone for the TD to seal the game and Kliff played for a FG with still plenty of time on the clock for the Pats to possibly get one of their own.

The Rams? You think we would have won that game had Zane made his kicks? I must have watched a different game where we completely more than 1 pass in the first half. But then we'd also have to talk about Kylers pick 6 and another fumble.

Has Zane had a rough couple of games? Sure. Would I replace him if there was a sure fire better guy out there? Absolutely.

But it's revisionist BS is you think Zane has been losing us games.

We were at the Dolphins' game at SFS. Zane did not lose the game for us. The team did that with several head scratching plays and Kliff's conservative play calling down the stretch.

Heck, the Bills game shouldn't have come down to the Hail Murray play even.

Maybe one of these days we will fire on all cylinders and have a solid game against an opponent not named the Jets.

The Pats' game never should have been close if not for Kliff being Kliff. Want to talk field goals - how about the one before the half that should have been kicked? 3>0. But Kliff has a thing for getting stuffed on 4th and goal as evidenced by the Giants' game, too. :) Zane wasn't even active yesterday and Kliff chose to go for it rather than kick it.

Jesus.

The team had other issues, this is true.

We're talking about a specific one here, and that's Zane.

I'm not going to re-litigate the evidence, but I'll just present them again:

Look, EVERY team should work towards NEVER needing a FG. And they DO.

But let's not use our inadequacies in other areas to excuse Zane's, please.

Let's talk about yesterday (no Zane).

Kliff went for it on 4th and goal rather than kick a sure field goal. Came away with zero points.

Nugent missed a kick short (nullified by a false start penalty). With the additional yardage, Kliff did not have Nugent attempt another FG and instead had Kyler run around and fall down.

Kliff punted to the Giants rather than attempt a long FG.

Where's the confidence...?

Oh, never mind. We won so all is forgotten. :)

That missed kick was more of a result of the awkwardness of play, IMO.

You mean from the 1 yard line? KK has been going for those all year long, even before Zane was struggling.

Nugent was only making them from 47 yards in warm ups, yet they still tried the FG because they didn't have much of another choice. Even after the false start, he didn't have the leg for it.

They KNEW what they had with Nugent before the game started and called the game accordingly. That has more to do with Nugent's decrepit kicking leg than a lack of confidence.

Now why they didn't try to find a kicker off of the street instead of keeping Nugent on the practice squad and calling him up is another matter.

Here you go again, bringing up other people's issues to whatabout for Zane. Stop it.

If you feel KK is an incompetent hack, fine. Doesn't excuse Zane being unable to do what the heck he's being paid to do.

You missed some words in your highlighting.

Also: This THREAD is about Zane being replaced by Nugent, and why that is.

You act like KK personally walked over and deflected the ball so Zane would miss.

The BOTTOMLINE: As "incompetent" as you think KK and/or KM is, they managed to put us in a position where a FG was good enough to win or tie, and the guy who is being paid a lot of money by any standard to accomplish that work didn't do his job when he was called upon. And NO amount of excuses or whataboutism is going to change that fact.

Yup. In the NE game the Pats screwed up about as bad as you can. They gifted us a chance by throwing a late pick. We miss the go ahead FG. We then gift them a chance with a late hit penalty. Difference is their kicker made it from even further out. We lose. Both teams made mistakes all day but in the end the kickers decided it.

This is the part that frustrates me more than the playcalling or (not as bad as it looks on the surface) the defense (big problem besides last week).

The Vikings have a kicking problem and the team reported a tryout with Taylor Bertolet.

We did too but didn't try to find a kicker... sigh.

Nugent made 4 kicks between 30-39 yards. A distance from which Zane is also perfect this season. The only longer kick Nugent tried was short from 55 (nullified by a penalty). So we know nothing new.

Neither of these guys may be our future kicker, although Zane obviously has much more upside.
