Oakes, New Rockford-Sheyenne boys' hoops lose in state tourney

Mar. 20—MINOT, N.D. — The No. 7-seeded Oakes boys' basketball team could not overcome a slow start in a 50-39 loss to No. 2-seeded Our Redeemer's in the first round of the NDHSAA Class B Boys' Basketball State Tournament on Thursday, March 20, at the Minot State Dome.

Both teams got off to slow starts in this game with the Knights taking a 7-6 lead into the second quarter. The Tornadoes (22-5) shot 3-for-11 from the field, 0-for-2 from three and they did not attempt a free throw. The Knights shot 3-for-10 from the field, 0-for-3 from three and 1-for-2 from the free throw line.

The Knights did not take very many shots in the second quarter but they hit most of them, shooting 5-for-8 from the field, 4-for-5 from three and 1-for-2 from the free throw line. The Tornadoes shot 2-for-13 from the field, 0-for-6 from three and they did not find themselves at the stripe in the second quarter. The Knights second quarter shooting saw them take a 22-10 lead into the half.

After the Knights (24-2) continued to shoot the ball well in the third quarter and took a 33-17 lead into the final quarter, the Tornadoes did their best to fight back into this one, bringing to within single digits at 42-34 late in the quarter. The Knights were able to wilt the game away at the line from there and got the 11-point win. In the final quarter, the Tornadoes outscored their opponents 22-17 while shooting 7-for-12 from the field, 4-for-6 from three and 4-for-8 from the free throw line. The Knights shot 4-for-9 from the field, 1-for-2 from three and 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.

The Tornadoes were led by Braysen Sagert's 13 points. The Knights' Jace Weekly's 17 points paced his squad.

The Tornadoes return to the floor at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 21, when they take on Hankinson. The Knights are back in action at 1 p.m. on March 21, when they faceoff against Bishop Ryan.

New Rockford loses to Wilton-Wing

The No. 8-seeded New Rockford-Sheyenne boys' basketball team was unable to pull off the upset in a 69-53 loss to No. 1-seeded Wilton Wing in the first round of the state tournament.

The beginning of the game was back and forth with the Rockets (22-5) taking their largest lead of the day at three points midway through the quarter before the Miners (25-1) tied the game up at 13 heading into the second.

The Miners did enough in the second quarter to outscore the Rockets 17-14 in the frame and take a 30-27 lead into the half.

The Miners started to pull away in the second half by pushing thier lead out and taking their largest lead of the day at 21 points midway through the fourth on their way to the 16 point win.

The Rockets shot an identical percentage from the field in all four quarters, 6-for-16 for 37.5% and a combined total of 24-for-64. They shot 1-for-5 in the first and third quarters from three while shooting 2-for-4 in the second and 1-for-6 in the fourth. They finished the game shooting 0-for-6 from the free throw line. The Miners shot 47.4%from the field, 54.2% from three and 2-for-4 from the charity stripe.

The Miners are back in action at 2:45 p.m. on Friday, March 21, when they take on the winner of the game between North Border and Westhope/Newburg. The Rockets return to the floor at 8:15 p.m. on March 21, when they take on the loser of the game between the Sioux and the Eagles.
