Now that off season is practically over and the roster has settled, I thought it would be a good time to assess the Cards entire roster makeover.
I give the Cards an A-. When you look at positions where the Cards were deficient last year, they have addressed it this off season.
LT: Even if Veldheer turns out to not be an elite LT, he's going to be better than the Sowell/Brown combo that manned the position last season.
Slot/Speed WR: Well, the Cards certianly gave themselves some options at this position by signing Ted Ginn and burning 2 draft picks. This element has long been missing from the Cards offense. If Brown pans out, it may become strength.
SS: I'm not a huge fan of Bucannon in round 1 but he is their 1st rounder and should be an upgrade at the position. If he has more coverage skills than believed, it will greatly upgrade the position.
DL depth: Rookies shouldn't be counted on to start and that's good for the Cards. DL depth has needed to be addressed for a couple years running and the draft has given them a couple nice candidates in Stinson and Martin. They should get their feet wet this year and become more viable options down the road.
TE: The Cards also went nuts to ensure there are options available at TE. Brining back Ballard and adding Niklas and Carlson gives the Cards a solid, stable TE corp that can be effective in both the run a pass game. If Housler can step up, this group will be very good.
CB: Cromartie in, Cason out. Huge upgrade and Powers will be an excellent nickel.
OG: Cooper should provide a big impact to the OL.
As you can see, the Cards went down the list and came away better, at least on paper, at every area of need. The only downside was not being able to sign Dansby, thus the A-. They tried but Cleveland's ridiculous offer made that go by the wayside. Hopefully Minter can play somewhere close to Dansby's level. Evenso, that's really the only negative to the offseason and the positives far outweigh the negative. All in all, it was a superior job by the FO.
