Quarterback- I truly believe this competition is over. The way Skelton came in and played going 3-3 with a TD on his only drive just put the icing on the cake. Kolb gets the number two spot by default. I think everyone has seen enough of Kolb to know he is not the answer.

Ryan Lindley- This guy has talent. He has clearly out played Bartel and should have the #3 spot easily. I think after this year we will cut Kolb and Lindley will be the #2 quarterback for 2013.

Wide Receivers- The biggest surprise of this preseason has been LaRon Byrd to me. There is just no way that he doesn't make the team if he's healthy. I think we have a solid bunch of guys this year to throw to.

Larry Fitzgerald- We all know what he can do, nuff said.

Andre Roberts- He has looked really good and should be dangerous coming out of the slot this year.

Michael Floyd- I think he will be brought along slowly the first half of the year. Mostly for blocking and four receiver sets. Then he will make more of an impact in the second half of the year. He is the complete package for a WR. He has great body control to get between the defender and the ball. He also can go up and make the tough catch. He has great size and blocks very well to help in the running game. He also has soft hands to catch everything. Even though I was wishing for an offensive linemen with our number one pick, Floyd should be a solid #2 for us in the next year or two.

Early Doucet- The one thing that has really stood out to me this preseason about him is his blocking. He has done a good job and is stronger than I thought he was. I am happy with having him as our fourth wideout. Now that he has a few years under his belt and is coming into his prime, he should be a decent receiver for us going forward.

The last spot I think is up for grabs. I think DeMarco Sampson has the edge right now over Jaymar Johnson and Stephen Williams. He stood out more in the game against Oakland.

Tight Ends- Biggest question to me for this group is do we keep Todd Heap and if we do, do we keep a fourth TE on the roster as an insurance policy in case he gets hurt. I am guessing that we do because we kept four TE's last year.

Rob Housler easily has the most talent and will be our passcatching TE. He has really improved on his blocking as well and I think that will be the difference in him starting.

Jeff King- Proved himself last year to be our best blocking TE so even though he has been out with an injury, he is still a lock to make the team. Plus he was a solid receiver as well.

Todd Heap- At this point he makes a nice backup. He still can catch the ball and is a good blocker. Do the Cards keep him over the young guys like Skelton and Dray? With his injury history that is a big question.

Steve Skelton- I have seen enough of him to think he will be a better TE than Jim Dray. Good all-around skills and keeping him will make his brother happy.

Jim Dray- If he makes the team over Skelton it will be because of special teams. He did have a pretty good game against Oakland though and if Skelton doesn't stay healthy Dray could get the fourth spot.

Running Backs- This is the key to our season. With the way our line is banged up and not very good at pass protecting our running backs will have to save the day for us. The good news is Ryan Williams and Beanie Wells are good enough to do just that.

Ryan Williams- Boy he sure looked good against Oakland. If he stays healthy he will be the lightning in our backfield to Beanie's thunder. You can see the potential this guy has to be very explosive out of the backfield.

Beanie Wells- He proved last year that he has what it takes to be a starting NFL runningback. With his thunder and Williams lightning we have the makings of one of the better backfield tandems in the NFL.

LSH- If Williams stays healthy I see him taking over LSH's role in the running game. He will stay on the team because of his special teams ability and will get the occasional carry or screen pass, but Williams is an even better scat back than LSH.

I think William Powell has the edge in the fourth spot right now, but two weeks ago I would have said Alfonso Smith. Both these guys could make the team if Beanie isn't heathy to start the season. Still I think we pick one or the other. The next two games will decide who stays.

Anthony Sherman- He's our fullback period barring injury. He does everything well. I do think we will see him catch more passes out of the backfield this year.

Offensive line- Right now I am more worried about this group than any other on the roster. I really hope the Cardinals find away to bring in a LT from somewhere. Either through a trade or a free agent pickup like Chad Clifton. If we go into the season with what we have at tackle it will be a nightmare that comes true. Riley Reiff would have really looked good right now as our number one pick. The Cards have nobody to blame but themselves for this though. They have done next to nothing to improve the offensive line for the last five years. I hope this year is a wakeup call for them and they draft an OT in the first round next year. Losing Levi Brown hurt badly.

LT- This is some kind of bad joke or nightmare. DJ Young, D'Anthony Batiste or Nate Potter. First Potter isn't even close to being ready at this point. Neither is DJ Young. Young does have some ability, but for him to learn on the fly like this would be very dangerous to the health of our quarterbacks. Batiste is probably the best out of the three at this point. Still we will have to give help constantly to the LT whoever it is with both RB's and TE's. This will be the biggest no brainer Russ Grimm and KW have ever faced.

LG- Daryn Colledge- Solid in all aspects of his game. Our best lineman and the rock we will have to depend on for the left side of our line.

C- Lyle Sendlein- He is what he is. A decent center. Dependable yet average. The weakest part of his game is strength. Bigger DT's will push him back to the QB. He positions himself well and can pull and get to the second level pretty good.

RG- Adam Snyder- Has looked better after each game so far. Looks like he can be slightly better than average. Not as strong as I would have hoped for, but looks like he will get the job done. Decent in both run-blocking and pass-blocking. With David Decastro sitting there for us to take at number one the RG position could have had a probowler there for the next decade. Just saying.

RT- Bobby Massie- This is the guy with the most potential and the guy I would start. We don't have anybody else on the roster that I would start over him. Let him get his licks in now and by mid-season he should be fine. We will have to give him help with a RB or TE just like we would any other guy on the roster that we have to put at RT. Why not put the best guy with the most talent in there now. Besides he is the strongest run-blocker as well and this team will have to be a running team first now.

Backups- Jeremy Bridges looks okay at guard , but should never sniff the tackle position again.

Senio Kelemete- I like this kid. Should be the backup at LG. He has good movement skills both pulling and getting to the second level. Plays hard and with attitude. Give him a year and should be able to start. Not real strong, but positions himself well to make the block.

Rich Ohrnberger- Love the way this guy plays. Mean and nasty. Finishes his blocks. Watching him play center against Oakland he held his ground well and showed good strength. I would start him over Sendlein. Russ Grimm should get every linemen together in the film room and show all of them tape on Ohrnberger. His attitude is the way every offensive linemen should play. If he doesn't make the team as the backup center it will be a shame. He is the best center on the roster now.

it looks like we will be running a lot of 1 WR sets so that the tackles can have some help chipping on both sides of the line :)

I agree with everything except one position. With the condition of our Oline it would probably be wise to keep 4 QBs. We may be replacing one every few weeks as one after the other gets massacred by opposing Dlines.

We aren't keeping 4 QB's. If we need another, we will pick up a FA veteran.

I would tend to disagree with this assessment. Powell has performed against 3rd and 4th stringers who are fighting to make practice squad. LSH has performed well against starters when given the opportunity as a nice change of pace back plus he is a special team ace. There is no other body of work on Powell so he will be a big unknown. He certainly is pushing Alfonso Smith for the #4 position, that is if we do carry four RB's along with a FB.

Shermanator is the closest of an effective FB we got after Larry Center... I also think he should be exploited more in the offensive schemes causing mismatches and not just blocking.

This would be my proposal for starting OL:

LT: Batiste (has played LT and not RT; if he struggled as the RT, he may do ok as a LT)
LG: Colledge
C: Sendlein
RG: Snyder
RT: Massie (throw him into the fire if he is expected to be our starter eventually, its not that we have better options available at this point)

If the Cardinals don't bring in anyone then that Is what I would try as well. Whoever the LT is, he will need help whether it is the RB's chipping at the DE or a TE. Whiz and Grimm have to know this. You cannot leave the LT alone on the island with no help.

Isnt he saying williams would take over for LSH, not powell?

I don't think there is anyone in the market available who can come in and start playing "starter" tackle right away. The talent is just not there. Unless we trade for someone (and I don't know who), the best option would be to come up with a solution from current roster. Even if we bring any FA in, it will be as a backup, IMO.

Let's just hope that the Cards do bring in someone to play LT. I'm affraid that they will go into the season and play musical chairs with Young, Potter and Batiste.

I'm sorry I thought he meant William Powell... did he mean Ryan Williams? If so, then of course, it is a no brainer.

the quote you used said williams, thats all im going off of. :)

have yet to read the entire writeup.

I'd plug in Kelemete at RG (can he handle the right side?) and move Snyder out to RT. All indications are that Snyder is a better guard than tackle, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Snakester: "Jeremy Bridges looks ok at guard, but he should never sniff tackle again".

Bridges played well in a backup role last year in relief of Brandon Keith, who just couldn't cut the mustard. I would not dismiss him out of hand as not being able to sniff the tackle spot. He played much better than Keith did.

Bridges played decent the last couple of years at tackle. You are right about that. I am going off of what I have seen of him so far in the preseason games. He just looks old and slow. Maybe he is not in game shape yet or is slacking because it's preseason, but whatever the reason is he doesn't look very good so far.

Can we redesign the playbook to at least partly compensate for weakness at LT?

i.e. different mix of plays, different blocking schemes, more screens, more empty formations with wide line gaps, more heavy formations with 2 TEs, a FB and TB? etc.?

Play-geeks, what say you?

I think that's being a little over-dramatic. Is this team a good left tackle away from being 14-2? If Joe Thomas got traded for Beanie Wells, are you suddenly certain that we're a playoff team?

I think that Levi Brown being here changes the ceiling for this team from being 9-7 to maybe 8-8. No one appreciates the left tackle position more than I, but Joe Thomas and Jake Lynch haven't lead their respective teams anywhere.

I know you're talking about Powell here, but I don't think that Ryan Williams' return affects LSH's touches at all. LSH was never going to get more than 8 touches a game in the offense, anyway. He's too small and gets injured too easily. But he can bring instant impact if he's put in for 12 plays a game. Williams is going to cut into Beanie's play time. That's good if it allows Beanie to stay healthy for 16 games, it's less good if it prevents Beanie from getting into a rhythm and he's pressing on every carry because he's afraid of getting taken off the field if he doesn't gain 6 yards.
