yeehaw... the relative bane of cardinal quarterbacks...
Jared Veldheer says he is planning to come back. One might say, for $10mil...hell yeah, so would I. Apparently he had some personal issues to work out last summer and being back in the trenches has him feeling content.
This is good news.
Without a doubt JV was at the very worst our second best lineman, personally I think he was our best... but to avoid the debate we will go with top2...
It is however my opinion we should keep him on the left side. I clearly remember seeing him play a season at LG for the Raiders... but looking it up says otherwise,...apparently he played center instead? either way, the guy is solid and is accustomed to playing on the left and if he is going to back up DJHump why not keep him on the left...it is much easier for him to adjust to being back at LT if his muscle memory is still attuned to being on the left and if he has to step out to LT it is far easier to replace a guard than it is a tackle.
we can save a bit of cap space by cutting Iupati, he is injured often, and even in his pro bowl days he was a horrid pass blocker,...and he is no longer in his pro bowl days.
Having a left side of DJHump and JV makes our QB's blind side pretty safe....feeling safe gives a QB a warm fuzzy feeling and helps him focus more on whats going on down field. Rather we have a rookie or bring in a vet or have an immobile Carson Palmer back there for another year... protecting the blind side is a good idea all around.
There are a few really decent OT's in the draft and we should get one. Harry mentioned drafting McGlinchey from Notre Dame if we dont get a QB in the draft...and its a good idea if we dont go QB in round one. He is a natural LT who we can play on the right but have as a safety net if DJHump dont work out or continues to finish seasons on the IR. McGlinchey is 6'7" and 295, fairly light on his feet and athletic...a great guy to have at RT with so many teams now lining up their speed rushers on that side. His technique is pretty solid.
take some time and check out Frank Ragnow of Arkansas he is a C/G... 6'5" 320 lbs.....most of his experience is at RG but he started all last year at center.... in 45 starts at Arkansas this guy never allowed a single sack... not one...and he has a little bit of attitude, like he might just bite your ear off in the pile. we need some of that. Ragnow can be had in the third round.
AQ Shipley is an under sized center as was Lyle Sendlein before him...seems to be a pattern here in az, lol. His limitations would be less an issue with Veldheer and Ragnow on either side of him and our run blocking in the middle would be pretty solid. Ragnow can learn the line calls and the NFL game playing RG and take over for shipley in a year or two.
Make no mistake about it. Rather we draft a rookie or sign a vet the future of the team runs through the offensive line. we need a couple of talent infusions to the line and McGlinchey and Ragnow are both highly talented youngsters.

That is an oline we can win with. a line that can protect whoever is at QB AND open holes for David Johnson.
Throw in a Simmie Cobbs Jr(6'4" 220 4.4) of Indiana or Arden Tate(6'5" 225 4.45) of Florida as a second round pick and we have an instantly revamped offense. assuming of course Palmer stays on or we sign a guy like Cousins or Taylor...or Smith...
What are your ideas for the oline? There are rarely high talent linemen in free agency, and especially not ones we can sign as broke as we are this off season... even if Palmer retires we need his money to sign another QB if we dont draft a guy.
I say we draft the guys, throw them into the game and let them learn on the field
