Starting Lineup:

Left Tackle: D.J. Humphries, 64.9
Left Guard: Mike Iupati, 50.1
Center: Mason Cole, 41.7
Right Guard: Justin Pugh, 51.1
Right Tackle: John Wetzel, 60.7

Arizona is another team where it’s difficult to find any singular player to single out, but for now, left tackle D.J. Humphries and his 64.9 overall grade tops the Cardinals line. The encouraging thing for Arizona is that his pass-block grade has increased every week this season after allowing six pressures against Washington in Week 1. This past week, he didn’t allow a single pressure against San Francisco.

I honestly don’t think the pass blocking has been THAT bad. Definitely not 32nd. What happened to Iupatis elite run blocking in the preseason? The run blocking definitely has been abysmal. I had high hopes for Iupati and Pugh this year.

The lack of interior push in the run game and the lack of separation of the receivers in the passing game is apparently worth about 150 yards per game less than our opponents. This is what it looks like when OC's like McCoy and Whiz call plays based on a system with no regard to the actual abilities of the players they have.

"Gotta execute" blah blah. If they can't do it, call different schemes to mask their weaknesses, *******.

IMO our line is suffering from bad scheme... looks like they are always trying to drive block instead of opening holes... they are just standing up the defense

I personally believe that the offensive line is suffering from lack of wr production. The wr never seem to get any consistant separation. If the wr could get separation it would back the safties off of the line of scrimmage and essentially give the opponents one less lb. Don't know if the wr. are bad routes or a bad schemes, but they could sure be part of the problem with the run game.

Tough to single out the Oline when teams are staked in against them, basically daring the O to beat them over the top. It's put their emphasis on ground and pound and quick passes in serious disarray. Good thing is that they're finally taking some chances with a QB with some velocity/pace on his ball when needed to open things up more, actually benefitting the ground game they want to and were built to rely on. To do that it definitely helps to play with a lead as well.

Did anyone catch Mark Schlereth on Bickley's show? Pretty depressing.

http://arizonasports.com/category/p...740-a97501633c96&sid=1015&n=Bickley+&+Marotta

He points to the OL being a massive issue - mainly pointing at Cole and Pugh not being strong enough at the point of attack - same thing with the tight ends.

"…you can sit there and tell me about schemes and learning curves, about all those things, but when you get a double team at the point of attack and you get 600 that can't move 300, is that a scheme issue or is that a talent issue? That's not a scheme issue. You've schemed it up well. You've got 600 lbs of beef against a 300 lb DL and you don't get 2 inches of movement, that's not scheme, the scheme is fine. That is a talent issue. That's a lack of execution issue. So is that going to get better all of a sudden? Are your players going to become more talented? No, I would venture to guess that is probably not the case…"

You might want to take all that with a grain of salt because I think Schlereth does still have some kind of relationship with McCoy. And you can get a sense of that when Bickley follows up asking if McCoy is the right guy to work with Rosen. But at the same time, Schlereth did play OL in the NFL for years and has been watching Cardinals tape the past few weeks. So it's hard not to respect his opinion on the OL aspect of things on its surface.

I can't think of many things that would be more disappointing than Shipley beating out Cole out for the starting center position next year. But I thinks it's a possibility we might have to brace ourselves for.

I saw PFF stat that Rosen is pressured on 47% of dropbacks which is most for QBs with multiple starts. Amazing that he has only been sacked twice so far.

Not even worried, Cole is a rookie and needs to get stronger, McCoy schemes runs to the weakest part of the OL. I think we see the real problem.

always gotta watch out for those exe players calling people out.
way back in the day when I played...I played a little bit of oline...on running plays we would often do what we called a kick step, say...to the left, so we could gain inside leverage and drive the defender to the right.. thats how we opened holes for the RB...a guard and a tackle would both kick into the same gap and drive the DT and DE apart so the FB could come through and level the LB, thus giving the RB a wide open lane to get his wiggle on.
I havent seen any of that from this oline yet..... you expect a guy like Cole to need to get stronger,... thats the #1 need for nearly all rookie olinemen.... but Iupati has always been known for his strength and run blocking... but somehow he is doing exactly the same thing as cole, pugh, and smith... they are making contact and standing their guy up...creating a wall for the rb to run into...

our line is better than they get credit for...we play against a stacked box all game long but our rookie qb has only been sacked twice...and one of those was due to a snap being rolled to him....it looks like the blocking schemes on certain plays is just poor,...because on other plays they get nice movement...cant be certain if thats on mccoy or the oline coach or even the center calling out the wrong assignments

would be really nice to have a guy quick enough to get some serious RAC off of some quick slants....that would help clear the box a little.
right now I am chalking it up to learning curve with the new offense... the line coach was known to be top notch while with carolina and there is no reason to think he suddenly started to suck when he got to the desert...some of it could also be due to linemen reading the defense differently, confusion, lack of communication
gonna rewatch the SF game today and see if I can see a noticeable difference in the few running plays that had an impact.

This would be the same offensive line Wilks called "the strength of the team" in camp

Thats why he is a bit naive for a 49years old man coming with such statements
Better keeping a low profile and then let fans and experts judge your work, and evaluate the strenght and weakness

that might be some of it....... but when your first play is an over the top 75 yard TD, and you still don't do much on the ground........

The Cardinals problem start, but don't end at the O line. They've got issues from top to bottom. When your offense can only get 10 first downs with 5 turnovers and 20 min of possession in a 60 min game.
The entire o is a complete mess...and it starts with the scheme....then down to the players executing the scheme. After 5 weeks they've shown they CAN NOT execute what he wants to do and yet he maintains the same course of action. Problem for the team, coaching staff and fans is there is nothing they can do about it now....and the sad thing is they never had the for site to see it...and the sad thing is when coaches fail this bad it's not likely they'll do anything different the following year.
I never liked the hiring of position coaches who had 1st round talent such as Wilks did with Luke K. Not sure if you saw how most of Peyton Mannings qb coaches got moved up to head coaches and offensive coordinators...and most fell flat on their face.
When you can get coach who can get a 6th round pick or picks into pro bowl contention...NOW YOU GOT A GUY...the Cardinals didn't hire that way though.

the PFF thing is concerning --

1. It matches the eye test. Performance looks bad, and is bad per the ranking
2. DJ Humphries has a below avg ranking, and is arguably the most talented OL on the roster. Yikes. I guess per games, he is only playing the equivalent of about year 2 1/4 -- so expecting improvement with experience isn't totally unrealistic, but still.....
3. Mason Cole is a rookie -- but still -- a 41 ranking. I believe that's pretty much last.
4. Iupati and Pugh are vets -- so expecting improvement isn't realistic. At least Iupati is off the books cap wise next year. Pugh on the other hand........ is the 8th highest paid guard in the NFL, and is on the books for 4 more seasons after this.

of all my issues with Keim -- his failure in scouting and building an offensive line is #1.

Idk, they haven’t been good, but they haven’t been THAT bad. At least compared to a team like Houston where Watson has taken the most hits out of any QB so far by far.

Where does that 64.9 put Humphries in terms of LT's? I ask because we need to replace him this offseason if he is not worth $9.5M next year.

The 32 ranking doesn't pass the eye test. I've watches Giants games and their OL is much worse.
PFF inked the Cardinals in at 32nd after the Skins game. Other teams move up and down the list, but the Cards just reside in the outhouse.

Bah humbug!

We have seen turnstile OL before - and this isn't' our current OL. They aren't very good, but like some have mentioned - it seems intentional. Maybe the scheme is messed up, maybe they are keeping things simple to help Cole out as he gets experience, but we've seen much worse as a group in the recent past.

Houston has run more plays than the Cards -- 192 passing attempts vs 139 for the Cards.

that diff of 53 is nearly two games worth of passing attempts

and at least Houston has gotten something out of those hits surrendered: they literally have double the offensive yards that the Cards have produced

I think the line has looked fine or average at least in the passing game. The running game has stunk but it may be more due to the play calling & teams stacking the box vs bad line play. I mean when the defense knows you are running it makes it hard to block everyone. This would definitely give the line worse rankings.

I will say this for Houston, Watson holds the ball forever.

The cards line is barely adequate in the pass game and is Abysmal in the run game.

The ranking seems believable to me.

This is a bad line. Pugh was dumped by the Giants. He had injury issues and even when healthy he was nothing special. Whoever thought moving him from tackle to guard would work doesn’t know much about the required guard skill set. Injuries have long ago eroded Iupati’s skill. He’s basically immobile. When I responded to the draft one sentence is telling. “Cole is not talented enough to ever be a starter.” He’s versatile but not dominant. He’s smart enough to make the line calls but not talented enough to make a difference. I never understood grabbing perennial failure, Smith, to start at RT. Wetzel is a bigger, but not more talented, version of Cole. So that leaves a Humphries. Apparently he can only play LT. Of course that’s a problem. He proved last year he can be adequate at left tackle. So the Cards are faced with an avoidance-avoidance conflict. Keep Humphries at LT or try to replace an entire line. At best they get Shipley back and he holds up for 1 more year. There’s a reasonable chance the Cards could get a RT in the draft and maybe a guard in round 2. 2020, depending on who gets extended has the potential for some useful guards. They could then move the 2019 RT left or draft a left tackle. It would be nice if Humphries plays up to his ability then they could likely be reasonably decent next year.
