Offensive Line Stats So Far

Some fun stats from Football Outsiders about the Cardinals OL:

Run Blocking: 4.37 Adjusted Yards Per Run (3rd in NFL)
Pass Protection: Sacks 4.2% of Attempts (6th in NFL)

Yards Per Rush (NFL Rank):
Left End: 5.42 (6th)
Left Tackle: 3.96 (14)
G/C/G: 3.77 (23)
Right Tackle:5.28 (2)
Right End: 6.54 (1)

Percent of Rushes to Each Side:
Left End: 7%
Left Tackle: 22%
G/C/G: 49%
Right Tackle: 13%
Right End: 8%

So our interior line is the weakest point of attack but we attempt nearly half of our rushes between the Guards. This is not surprising, as the entire NFL attempts over half its rushes between the guards. Long term, improving this area of our blocking will give us the biggest bang for the buck (cough, Lyle, cough). I dare say a quick fix to the recent Red Zone woes would occur if our two stud guards would start playing up to their potential.

Time to work some stuff out against the worst Rush D in the League.

Well, I think the team realizes this too. They only brought Lyle back after coming to terms with the fact their replacement plan was hot garbage.

I'm not sure we can afford to bring in a top free agent center next year. Im also weary of throwing an unproven rookie out there either, especially early in the season.

I can see us drafting someone in round 2/3 and bringing Lyle back for one last season to goom them for 2017.

Thanks for posting that man, it's really interesting.

I truly believe in the idea that an offensive line performs better once all five guys have played together for several games (like at least 15 games).

And so what is heartening is that I think we'll see this already respectable Cardinals group get even better as the year goes on.

Ah yes. Rugby Muffin = a one man lynch mob for poor Lyle Sendlien. lol..

You know Rugby, we did make it to a superbowl with the former longhorn at C... I guess you might say we made it "in spite" of Sendlien.

Now if Dave McGunnies was firing Lyle out there week after week, then I might be inclined to see your side of things...

But I think what we're really seeing is that Lyle is like poor man's C version of Josh McCown... lol.. a guy with medium talent, usually tabbed as a "stop gap", that somehow though tends to stick in the league, despite not being flashy. Reggie Wells says hi from his cubicle by the way..

I honestly have always been kind of a fan of Sendlien. He's pretty mobile, and, at least during the first several years of his career, did a good of getting blocks at the second level.

I agree though that at this point, we need to draft a C, or next year in FA find a mid-tier type guy.

I've always been with Rugby on this one. Sendlein just isn't that good. He's a low-end starter in this lead, and upgrading the C position would vastly improve our interior run game.

"In spite of" would be an accurate description for what the Cardinals achieved with Warner at quarterback in regards to the offensive line. Warner had the dubious distinction of the being the most hit quarterback in the league that year.
