Philosophies vary in football. I have coached and known and or talked with coaches at every level. One thing they all tend to agree on is that they will take 3rd and 1 all day long. Some even 3rd and 2 if they have a strong running game.
This is where my philosophy comes in. If a coach will take 3rd and 1 all day.... what do you do on 2nd and 1? In my eyes it’s a free down and you should go over the top every single time. Go for the score. Throw behind the defense and the worst that can happen is you get 3rd and 1 .... but lots of good things can happen.
This is what frustrates me the most about kliff.... he plays for the sticks. It’s a losers mentality.... first downs are good but the team with the most first downs doesn’t win... the team with the most touchdowns wins.
Everyone knows the closer you get to the end zone the harder it is to score.... the 40 yard line is a great sweet spot to shoot for the end zone... plenty of room for the wr to get behind the defense and still get hit in stride.
We have a qb who made his name hitting deep balls outside the hash marks..... and now we have a guy with legit 4.3 speed and hands.
Seems to me taking advantage of free downs would be an easy decision to make.
Not to mention everyone running deep opens up a lot of running room for a squirrelly qb with wheels.
2nd and 1.... a free down with so many possibilities.... I can’t count how many times my teams have scored in that situation.
I would love to see the Redbirds adopt that philosophy
