No apologies on the jar jar name. That movie will never be a part of the series in my mind. One of only 2 movies I ever got up and walk out during. The other being Jackie Brown.

In 1997, people were calling it "Episode IV" or "A New Hope."

FWIW: "Episode IV: A New Hope" comes from the opening crawl and appeared beginning with the 1981 re-release, in order to be consistent with The Empire Strikes Back (and the eventual sequels and prequels that followed since). This is because 20th Century Fox wouldn't allow these words in the screen crawl for the original release, fearing it would lead to confusion.

It's still simply "Star Wars" to me and many others who watched the original as a kid, but I don't have any problem identifying it as Episode IV: A New Hope, especially when you're identifying the other films by their Episode numbers and subtitles.
