It didn't take long for former Ohio State basketball forward, Evan Mahaffey, to determine exactly where he wanted to continue his college basketball career. Just a matter of days after entering his name into the transfer portal, Mahaffey announced that he will be joining the Akron Zips basketball program via social media on Friday.

Out of Cincinnati's Archbishop Moeller High School, Mahaffey originally committed to Penn State and spent one season in Happy Valley before transferring to OSU in the offseason of his freshman season and has spent the last two years in Columbus. He earned a starting spot during the 2023-2024 season but had less of a role this past season after the Buckeyes used Micah Parsons in favor of Mahaffey more often than not this past year.

His minutes dropped by four per game during the 2024-2025 season, averaging 3.6 points and 3.1 rebounds during his junior campaign. He will not finish his career just up the road in Akron. Mahaffey is one of three Ohio State players to have entered the portal so far this season, joining Austin Parks and Meechie Johnson Jr.

OSU did get guard Gabe Cupps from Indiana out of the transfer portal and will likely look to add one or two more via the transfer route. As any further news becomes available, we'll have it for you.
