Speaking as a 30 year Steeler Fan, I'll admit, the Cards worry me. Warner is on fire, Fitzgerald and Boldin is the best WR tandem in the league (each of them would be star receivers on their own with other teams. Put them together and toss in Warner and wow!), and Hightower is one strong RB (he worries me more than James). Most impressive of all, however, is how your defense (which was filled with talent, but was a group of individuals on their own little island during the season) has learned to play as a complete unit. It's going to be one really tough matchup for the Steelers. I still believe we can pull it off, though. Here's how I see it going down:

Pass Coverage for Steelers:
Fitzgerald is going to make his catches. Plain and simple. It doesn't matter how good the coverage is, if the ball's anywhere near catchable he's coming down with it. Ike Taylor is the Steelers best cover corner. He has shut out some of the best WR's in the game, but he's not going to stop Fitzgerald. Instead, I see LeBeau putting Taylor on Boldin. Taylor can minimize Boldin's impact. McFadden is our other CB in base. I'd put him on Fitzgerald, with Ryan Clark (S) over top. Let Fitzgerald make his incredible catches, but do not let him get YAC. Between Troy, our LB's and Line (yes, we will drop our linemen in coverage, and pretty successfully, too), we should be able to keep your tight ends and RB's from having too much success as well.

Pass Rush for Steelers:
There's alot of confusion about the Steelers' pass rush. Don't be fooled by all of this talk about "Blitzburgh" and how Pittsburgh blitzes more than any other team. This is coming from some in the press that have no idea what the heck they are talking about. Pittsburgh very rarely brings more than four rushers at any one time, however, any time some analysts see a LB or DB coming, they automatically call it a blitz; when on average, they only bring 5 rushers 5-6 times a game, and an allout blitz only once ot twice a season (Greg Easterbrook's TMQ on ESPN has done some pretty good coverage of this, in the past and has a nice breakdown of one example from last Sunday in this week's column). However, there's no telling who those four are going to be on any particular play. I've seen them drop two linemen into coverage and rush one lineman, one LB, and two DB's. LeBeau's had Troy Polamalu line up at NT. Anything goes with these guys. That's the beauty of these formations and athletes, It will be next to impossible for Warner to tell which four are rushing, and which seven are dropping into coverage until after the ball is snapped.

Run Stopping:
As I mentioned before, James doesn't worry me. He and similar backs have rarely posed an issue for our D. Hightower, otoh, is the type of strong back we've had issues with in the past. I could see him having a good day, in the range of 18 carries, 65 yards. What makes our D work so well, in stopping the run and the pass both, is our line. They don't get the numbers like other lines, because in a 3/4, their job is to create the opportunities for the LB's. Casey Hampton (NT) is a monster of a man, he'll take up two on a pass rush, and may as well be a brick wall on rush attempts. Nobody runs it up the middle against him, period. You have to break it to the outside. That means taking on Aaron Smith or Brett Keisel. Smith may be one of the best pure DEs in the game today. He sheds blocks easily, great athleticism, good closing speed, and is smart. If you try running to his side, you're going to have to take it all the way to the sideline to turn the corner, and typically you'll have Troy and one of our LB's waiting for you by the time you get there. Keisel is called "Diesel" because of his strength. He is fantastic at penetration. He will be in your backfield. He is more likely to be responsible for taking the RB's down for a loss than either of the other two linemen. But he's also more susceptable to the draw or misdirection. That's going to be the best way to run it against the Steelers. Don't be expecting big carries, but some nice 4-5 yards here and there on draws and delayed handoffs.

Overall, it's going to come down to patience. How patient can your highpower offense be? You will be able to run the ball some, Fitzgerald will make some catches, but your not going to get those big plays you're used to. It will be a game of yards and field position. If you guys can maintain your patience, you might just walk out of there with your first Lombardi. If you don't...There's going to be a bunch of people in Pottsville, PA smiling and toasting the Steelers with their Yuenglings.

If we're patient, we're gonna lose. We need to come out guns blazing and get you back on your heels. If we fall into the trap of trying to play ball control, we'll be on the wrong end of a low-scoring affair.

If you start out fast, we'll need to start out faster.

Our special teams are suspect and you can pick up some cheap points that way if we have to defend a short field. This is my area of greatest concern.

We're better at stopping the run then anyone gives us credit for. Be prepared.

Fitz is better than the nice credit you gave him and I expect Boldin to be playing like a guy who wants to get a huge contract next year. This is his biggest chance to showcase his skills for every other team out there and he won't be shy about doing it.

Your team is great against the run. That's fine because we run like old people have sex: not too well and not too often. But if we have some early success, we're going to get a lot of momentum out of it, and if we don't, well, we didn't expect to in the first place.

The reason we played so well against Philly and Carolina is because we felt we should have beaten them the first time around, there was no mystery about playing them. There is absolutely no mystery to this staff surrounding Pitt. We stand a better chance of getting into your heads as you do us. By the same token, if we were facing the Pats, I think we would get stomped, because in the back of our minds I'm not sure we think we're in their league. But you guys are a totally different matter.

The last thing, and possibly the most important, is that the posters on this board some of the finest football minds I've ever come across and they are battle-tested at dealing with fans of other teams. I am possibly one of the weakest posters on this board when it comes to football knowledge, and I can easily come up with a dozen reasons why we'll win this game.

So just wait until Mitch gets a hold of this thread, and you'll really find out why your team is up the creek without a paddle. :)

Every one keeps stating that Pittsburgh will win and rationalizes that their defense can slow down our offense. While that may have some truth to it, I have yet to see any rationalization that the Pittsburgh offense can score at will against Cards' defense. With a gimpy Ward, a qb that can be rattled, will Pittsburgh still score more than Cards? The same arguements were used when Cards played against Eagles and Panthers. Both the teams had good defenses. Eagles did slow down Cards offensive juggernaut, but McNabb and company were not successful against our defense.

Unless someone has good points as to why Steelers will score 24 points or more, I think Cards win. The offense is capable of scoring 28+ points.

well, if nothing else, you get credit for not starting the thread like so many were last week(s) at this time: "let me tell you why the Cardinals have no chance....."

I think the key to this game is simple:

make the Steelers go long fields for their points. That means no cheap special teams scores, no turnovers deep or returned for scores, no 75 yard tds. I realize its much easier said than done.

If that is the case, I dont think Pittsburgh scores more than 17 points -- and I really like the Cardinals prospects in that case.

I just want to comment on one point; Why is there such a perception that Ben gets rattled? The guy is a flat out gamer. He does take some chances that do not always pay off, but rattled is just not accurate. Chad Pennington gets rattled, Delhomme gets rattled, Ben takes chances and there is a big difference.

Its going to come down to your offense versus our defense. We'll put up some points on offense, but make some mistakes as well. These two powerhouses will slug it out to a draw, IMO.

Our defense is going to have to stay aggressive and put our offense in good territory, or we are going to have a tough time.

Well the two weeks off is bad for us.

We were on a roll and I'd of just as soon played the game this weekend but that's the way it goes.

The matchup is interesting to say the least, IMO it'll come down to turnovers, as in who gets the most or the best quality ones.

We traded turnovers last week with the Eagles on an interception and then fumbled it back, that's not a game changer quality turnover that's just kissing your sister.

I'm going to say though that I think if it's even the Cardinals still have the better shot, just because they won't be down in the turnover department and I think our offfense can score on your defense better than your offense is going to score on ours.

It's tough to say really the teams haven't played yet but that's just what I'm thinking.

I feel the biggest matchup is going to be our ability to get to the passer. I called you guys going to the SB after Game 1 (Ironically my NFC champ was Philly) but in a early matchup between you two they showed an effective blitzing team can get to your QB. The point is not necessarily rattle him but put your offense in 2nd and 3rd in long and force Ben to make plays and press. which he has shown a proclivity to do.

Alot of people are making a big stink about your pass rush and obviously Harrison and Woodley are impressive. But one reason our run games and pass blocking has been so strong this post season is because of the play of our tackles. You would likely counter that we haven't played those type of pass rushers but Abraham, Peppers, and Trent Cole are all strong pass rushers that were mostly kept in check. If you guys get to aggressive, Wiz and Haley will use that against you which is why I have a lot of confidence as the Philly defense was actually playing better then you guys down the stretch and we attacked their strenght and came away relatively successful.

Our running game having any viability is the key. If we can at least put you on your heels by our running for 3 to 4 yards a pop that will open up our short passing/screen game and allow us to run that 1 or 2 WR base formation that is so good for play action and keeping your defense reacting rather then acting.

I think your big play ability will be taken away by DRC covering Holmes and I think Hood will do a good job on a hobbling Ward. Willie Parker wil get bottled up early and its important to put you in a postion where you can't run as much as you would like.

Warner to have a strong game with 1 turnover but 2+ TDs. I think Fitz will have a decent game (60 - 85 yds) but Breaston, Boldin, and one surprise defender will all have 20+ yard catches.

I expect Ben to get sacked 3 times at least and for our defense to harass him into mistakes - which he will make.

If Warner protects the ball and continues the strong play we can't use. I won't predict the final score but if Warner has a good game (200+ 2+ TDs 1 TO <) then there is no way you can beat us. Get to him and rattle him and you win. It's that easy.

And with the way he has played in this postseason and in the past I like our chances.

I hate to piss on your Wheaties bud, but if you're not rooting for the Cards then you shouldn't even bother watching the game. Nothing good will come of it for Steeler fans. Do what I did on Inauguration Day and rent some DVDs and video games. Keep the computer and cable box off and dont answer the phone.

Winner!

Another thing...all the media crap as you call it on blitzing, well, you are completely correct. And I wish you were wrong. I wish you blitzed a lot...because contrary to whatever the media is smoking, Kurt eats that crap up. He kills blitzes with the fast release.

Your disguised rushers and dropping seven guys is very confusing, and while I think Kurt is the BEST QB to go up against something like that, he's going to make some mistakes. he's also going to get a good read or two on it and make you pay, too.

That's why I think the Steeler D and Card O will basically cancel each other out. If you were truly "blitzburgh" as the media likes to say, I'd be a lot more confident. A lot more.

What you fail to understand is that Fitz and Boldin are not our only the threat. Steve Breaston had over 1000 yards this season too as our 3. You can double one, maybe two but you will leave Breaston open. I think Steve has a big day, and we'll see breasts bouncing down the field all day long. And if our rushing attack gets us 80 yards, we win. We just need the running game to be a concern, to force you to play a little more conservatively so that you are concerned just enough to bite a bit against play-action.

Your offense is not stellar. I expect Ben to be harassed and for us to have 2-3 sacks and a lot of hits. If we can slow down Parker and prevent big plays from Moss, we'll be ok. It's really no different than the formula against the Eagles. I think this will be a close game, but if we get more than 20, Cardinals victory.

Plus, Big Ben no turnovers through the playoffs?

He's due. And yes, I do believe in being "due." Ben's due to turn it over, and the Cards are due to win their first Super Bowl.

IMO opinion the keys to the game are simple.

Score early and keep putting them in a catch up mode.
Stop the run.
Time of possesion.
Turn overs
Special teams.

If we win 4 out of these 5 we will win the super bowl parade coming down central.

Hey, LukesDad & ALL Steeler fans...

WELCOME!! "Class" fans are always welcome here! So, it's the Steelers & the Cardinals for the World Championship. As a Cards' fan of 41+ years I'm just ENJOYING the moment. In many ways this is anti-climatic for me. You're NOT the Giants/ Eagles/Cowboys/Redskins. I grew up in CT. and it wasn't pretty. Under-statement!! Thing is, I like the Steelers! I respect their organization and the hard-nosed teams they put on the field. Every year they are a threat to WIN this thing. That's what I want from my Cards. To be considered a threat year in and year out. Anyways, I just can't hate on the Steelers.

As for the game itself?? After reading alot of comments let me add a couple "X-factors". For the Steelers: Big Ben LUVS sand-lot football. This accomplishes (2) things. 1./ BIG plays down-field when somebody shakes loose. ...And 2./ The "D" loses precious energy from all the chasing around. For the Cards: We have a guy named DRC (ie; Lightning in a bottle). In fact, I think he has an outside shot at being MVP for the game. Call it a hunch. Also, Antrelle Rolle. IF he gets his hands on the ball it'll probably end up in your end-zone.

In the end I think it'll be a close game. Kinduv' an older brother versus younger brother-type thing. So WHO wins?? Well, EITHER way its' History. (6) Championships for the Steelers or one of the GREAT under-dog stories of ALL-Time. I think GOD is a Cardinals' fan this year. This years' already been MIRACULOUS!! :D

To answer your question, I feel confident in the Steelers offense to be able to score because they have proved that they can against better defenses than what the Cardinals were ranked. What opposing fans seem to forget is that Pitts OL has faced 7 of the top 10 defenses in the league (along with the number 2 Ravens 3 times). Even the Bengals defense was ranked better than the Cardinals defense this year at number 12. The only games the Steelers have lost this year have been because of TO's against top defenses (Eagles #3, Giants #5, Titans #7 and Colts #11). Keep in mind also that early in the regular season there were season ending injuries to two OL players and a 1st round pick rookie RB, Parker was out for about 6 games and Ben was playing with a separated shoulder for the better part of the year (I'm not even sure it's completely healed yet, I just know he's said it's feeling better). The OL has had time to get used to playing as a unit, Parker is finally healthy again, and Ben is looking better than he has all year.

I'd also argue that the Cards defense was really only successful against the Eagles O for the first half, it was enough to win the game, but they did score 18 points very quickly against the Cards D.

The Steelers D also has an uncanny knack about holding even some of the best offenses to very low scores so that the offense has plenty of chances to score (i.e. Pats and Chargers...The Pats also had a high ranked defense this year and the Steelers put up 33 on them).

I'm in no way insinuating that Warner and Co. aren't going to give the Steelers a run for their money, it's going to be a great game in that respect, just trying to give you a little insight as to why it may seem like the Steelers OL may have looked less than stellar this year.

Right there with you. The steelers are a damn classy organization, and committed to winning, and winning tough. Hardnose, smashmouth, fundamental and solid football. Part of the reason I was very happy to bring Whis into Arizona hoping some of that Steeler mystique would rub off on us. It did. We are playing disciplined football right now, opportunistic, aggressive defense and in the playoffs we are putting out some ball control offense with big plays when needed.

This is Steelers vs. Steelers West, IMO. And I think it is going to be a whale of a Super Bowl.

Is it Feb 1 yet?

Your mistake is paying attention to what the cardinals were ranked in the regular season. That's a fatal mistake. In the last four games, they have gone back to the fundamentals of defense, staying in their gaps (which was their regular season right achilles heel), wrapping up on tackles (which was their regular season left achilles heel) focusing and studying tape harder than they have in their lives. What they are doing right now is playing at their potential, not at their regular season level, which was very up and down. Despite that, they were a middle of the pack defense overall in the regular season, in all but scores allowed and many of those points were put up on them during games they were laying down either after playing 3 games in 11 days against Philly or after they had clinched the division.

They aren't the Steeler D, but they aren't the regular season D you talk about when you mention their ranking.

Don't make that mistake in your assessment of this Super Bowl. Whis has these guys FOCUSED.

I fully understand they are performing better on D, or they would not have made it to the SB. My post was basically a reply to this statement "I have yet to see any rationalization that the Pittsburgh offense can score at will against Cards' defense." and I was just giving the reasons why I felt like the Steelers O might be able to put up decent numbers against the Cards D pretty much. There is evidence throughout the regular season and playoffs that they can against good defenses, so that's really all I have to go off of for this matchup, which despite either teams record, is a great matchup on both sides.

Yep, going to be an exciting game I think.

Some GREAT players on both sides will be on the field. Hines, Troy, AW, Fitz, Boldin, Warner, Ben....it surely is star studded.

How many probowlers are in this game? We have 5 on our end.

Here's to an injury free game, decided by play on the field, not by bad calls.

I'm very excited. VERY EXCITED.

Ike Taylor is the Steelers best cover corner. He has shut out some of the best WR's in the game, but he's not going to stop Fitzgerald. Instead, I see LeBeau putting Taylor on Boldin. Between Troy, our LB's and Line (yes, we will drop our linemen in coverage, and pretty successfully, too), we should be able to keep your tight ends and RB's from having too much success as well.

Whiz is very good about putting receivers in good matchup positions. If, as you say, the Steelers put Taylor on Boldin Whiz may put Boldin in the backfield to make it harder to establish coverage. They haven't done this much in the playoffs but it has worked several times in the regular season.

Dropping your lineman in coverage is something that scares me. Warner is a timing guy and dropping those lineman can disrupt his timing and can cause turnovers.

One thing that warner seemed to develop more in the post season was the pump fake. The receivers seemed to use double moves combined with the pump fake. Warner really never used that much in the regular season but he was able to find some very open receivers with that technique.
