Olympiacos prepares an offer for Kobe - Oct 14, 2008 (by Kostas Papadopoulos)
According to the Italian site basketcentral.it, an inner source from Olympiacos has revealed that the Reds are working on an extraordinary project: a super offer to propose to Kobe Bryant (198-G-78) for the next summer. Aggelopoulos' Bros would offer to the Lakers super star a contract of three years for 60 million dollars in total, with the option in the favour of the player to the term of every season.
Incredible, furthermore, seem the long series of benefits that would be included in the contract: from the villa on the Mediterranean, to the payment of the taxes all to expenses of the club, to the payment of the parcel of the agent in order to arrive to one boat with a lot of crew already specified. The final project of the owners of Olympiacos is to make a new arena (with a capacity of 15-20 thousand people), like the ones of the clubs of NBA, which when becoming true will be combined with the purchase of a private jet for the needs of the team.

20 millions a year in Europe after taxes is much more than 20 milllions a year in the NBA.

According to an expert: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=stein_marc&page=NBA-Notes-080719,
Delfino 3 millions euro a year in russia was equivalent to more than 9 M$ in the NBA (The Euro is not that strong anymore so it is probably something like 8M$ now).

I am not an expert and I don't know if you can project this for a 20M$ salary. But if you can, then the Olympiacos propose something near 40M$ a year.

Well, I remember pretty vividly what Kobe said during the Olympics, how he won't sign an extension until he has tested the "global market" and that he would take the $50M/year deal (probably $30M-35M tax-free) to play in Europe that LeBron would "consider".

I can't see it happen anywhere else other than Italy though, and they probably have to give him shares of the team to make it happen. Still not likely (unfortunately!).

I was just listening to a podcast with Kobe, and he said that story is dumb. it was a dumb question, and he and Lebron ran with it and were shocked at how big it became. He thinks it would be ridiculous for anyone to throw $50 million at any player, and treated a silly question in a silly manner.

It's ridiculous until it happens. Then everything changes. Ask Beckham.

Europe is trying to have its cake and eat it too with our NBA players. They lured some of our own and some of theirs back into the country and think they can go after the super stars.

I do remember LeBron saying that if someone offered him $50 mil per season, even if it were a euro team, he would listen. Remember that LeBron has made his motivation clear that he wants to become the first billion dollar athelete on the planet. Nevertheless, I'll believe it when I see it.

Pretty sure Tiger is a billionnaire, or close to it, right?

What's wrong with that? It's a business, and players will work where the money is. Athletes from around the world have come to US to play sports because of the money, so if basketball clubs in Europe start offering the same type of contracts or more, it's only a matter of time before some NBA starts will go play there.

the article says 20 million dollars, not 20 million euros. even if it was euros, it would be roughly 30 million a year which would not be nearly as much as kobe makes here with endorsements and what not

Nope. According to Forbes magazine, his net worth is somewhere around $650 million. And he is the highest paid athelete on the planet. MJ was second and Beckham was third

Nothing wrong with it. Just odd that the NBA is losing some lusture to Europe. I can only imagine that little kid playing ball in the streets of New York every day saying, "damn, I can't wait for the day I get to lace 'em up for the Olympiacos!"

i think the projection was that tiger would be the first billionaire athlete, and he would get to that point by 2010 if he keeps playing well until then. he'll probably be passed up eventually with the way professional athletes' salaries are going

I noticed that, but about Delfino the calculation was:
3 millions euros = 4.5 millions dollars (now it would be about 4 millions $).
=9 millions $ in the NBA

The important part is 4.5 millions after taxes (+house, car...) = 9 millions in the NBA. As I said, if the ratio is the same for Kobe (I don't know), it would be 20millions $ in Europe =40 millions in the NBA.
