If a player makes it through waivers then he can be traded just like before the deadline. If another team claims a player that is on waivers the team can either pull him off waivers or deal exclusively with the team that claimed him.

Also another little tidbit, players acquired after the August 31st deadline are not eligible for the post season IIRC. So teams have a couple of weeks to add pieces that could help them in the postseason.
