If Georgia basketball is going to return to the NCAA Tournament next season, it may have to do it without one of its best players from the last two seasons.
Guard Silas Demary Jr. announced on social media Thursday afternoon that he’s entering the transfer portal while also declaring for the NBA Draft.
The Bulldogs are already expected to lose projected NBA draft pick Asa Newell
Demary was second on the Bulldogs last season at 13.5 points per game and led the team with 3.1 assists per game while averaging 3.9 rebounds per game. He also led the Bulldogs with 58 3-pointers.
The 6-foot-5 Raleigh, N.C., native will be a rising junior. He played his best basketball in the stretch of the season when the Bulldogs won four in a row and set itself up for the program's first tournament appearance since 2015.
Demary wrote in an Instagram post that he prayed and had “thorough discussions,” with his parents and those close to him.
“My decision was not made lightly,” he wrote. “The bonds I’ve formed with Dawg Nation and the Athens community will forever hold a special place in my heart.”
Demary’s move comes a week after Georgia’s season ended with a first-round lopsided loss to Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament.
The Bulldogs lost three-year assistant Erik Pastrana earlier this week to a job at Miami.
