NEWCASTLE, England (AP) -- United States defender Oguchi Onyewu is set to join Newcastle on loan until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old Onyewu, who was named this year's U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year, will move from Belgian team Standard Liege if he passes medical tests at Newcastle on Monday.

Onyewu started all three matches for the U.S. team at last year's World Cup in Germany, and has scored one goal in 17 internationals since his debut in October 2004.

Onyewu has scored eight goals in 93 games for Standard Liege since joining in 2004.

The center back had also been linked with Chelsea, Lyon, Fulham Middlesbrough and Real Madrid.

Newcastle is 12th in the Premier League with 30 points. The Magpies have struggled with injuries and have won only one of their last seven matches.

Flippin' SWEET!!! Man, did the Toon army need this help. Cards fans have NO IDEA what injuries are compared to our season this time 'round.

It'll also help get this kid some big game experience.

I think with this transfer he likely won't be around for the Mexico match--neither will Dempsey..guys at new clubs will be less likely to leave for a friendly.

Any guesses who Bradley will ask for from Europe? He said 8.

My guess is Howard, Beasley, Bocanegra, Demerit, Convey, Cherundolo, Spector and Feilhaber.

What date is the friendly? I know they're on down time right now.

February 7...players with new teams would probably use the extra time to train with their teams. It is a FIFA date set aside for international matches though but I just don't know how much time Bradley will want them in camp beforehand.

See...we know how to have fun on Tyneside!

mad dog!

only drunk by idiots, old men and those not from Newcastle!

...does taste canny though!

also it gets called 'Newkie Brown' by those not from here :| , where as those from the area know it as 'Broon Ale' or simply a 'bottle of Broon'

English,

I watched a match this weekend between Blackburn and, I think Luten (sp?) it took place at K-something Road. I think it was an FA cup match. How small is that stadium? Good match.

Luton - Kenillworth Road (sp)

yeah its really small, its not a very big club (i think have only had a couple of years in the top div of English football)

a few funny things about them - also one of only a couple teams to try astroturf before it was banned and also the only ground to ban away supporters (started to let the in about ten years ago) after the ground was smashed up by Millwall fans a few years ago!

LOL! Millwall fans...the class of English football. Hopefully, they will be relegated again to Div. 2.

Newcastle was the team in the movie, Goal!, it was a good movie. Good for Onyewu moving up to that league which I'm assuming is better.
