OK, its 1am, I worked 9 hours today, and work at 9am for anoteh 9 hour shift. Keep that in mind when reading this:

Background:

Suns offer Kobe max contract at first possible time, but choose to set a meeting up for Friday instead of Thursday. Why?

Suns fly to Dallas, and apparently immediately offered a contract they knew Cuban would not match, but they didn't offer a max. Why?

BC said the team has some tricks up its sleeves for the FA plans.

Theory:

The Suns made their offer to Kobe Bryant becasue he was the number 1 priority. However, they should have met with him ASAP.

What if they didn't feel they had the team to lure Bryant?

Ok, here it goes...

The suns went to Nash, and got a verbal agreement VERY fast. In fact, before any team has talked to Bryant. They are still supposed to meet with Kobe, even though they dont have anymore cap space.

Perhaps the Suns will talk to Kobe, and say, listen, we will get the cap space to give you the max deal we promised. Our core will be the same, except we will also have Nash. If you give us your commitment, we can make this happen. A Nash, Marion, Amare trio would be VERY hard for Kobe to pass us.

If the Suns get a yes from Kobe, IMMEDIATELY ask the Mavs to do a sign and trade. Ask them to eat the last 2 years of Eisley's deal, and we will give them JJ. If need be, the Chicago pick next year.

The Mavs would add another set of players to use in an effort to land Shaq. The Lakers would not want to keep Shaq without Kobe. It would keep the team from rebuilding until his deal expired. They may be willing to take Walker for the cap relief, and Finley. Also their picking of the prospects Dallas has manged to aqquire this past week.

Eisley's deal does nothing to the Mavs, but they would be helping a conference rival a lot. However, they would be getting very well compensated for it, even if a Shaq deal doesn't materialize.

The Suns would be a financial mess, but our lineup for the next 5 years would be.

Nash
Kobe
Marion
Amare
Lampe?

That would be "having some tricks up our sleeves"

I will never loose faith. Kobe is coming, one way or another

To clarify, the main reason I have for keeping faith is the timing of everything.

They went by the book by offering Kobe a deal right away, but why postpone a meeting with his reps.

They went totally away from teh book by throwing huge money at another player 16 hours later. They knew the deal would be accepted, no way Nash could turn down that money.

Supposedly they still want to go for Kobe?

I'd prefer to just try and get Camby now!

I really want this team to be Amare's next season now that we got Nash.

I was kind of thinking the same thing as you, although I still feel this signing means Kobe simply wants to stay in LA.

However ... I mentioned in another thread ... not only does it make the Suns more atractive, but it might stop Shaq from being traded. Both of those things help the Suns cause with regards to Kobe.

But if this is the case, which I highly doubt, there is no way the cap space can be created by trading Eisely. He is untradeable. A deal with Marion would have to happen to a team well under the cap. Considering Marions age and talent, that's a very realistic possiblity ... if it comes down to that.

It's a fun thought, but we're probably wasting time. I think Kobe will stay a Laker.

I hope so because the Lakers are in the midst of a death cycle.

Actually, I think Dallas would do a Jake/Eisley/JJ for Nash deal. Cuban has always tried to collect talents without financial hesitation. Eisley's is bad for only one year, next year his will be a great trading asset. I'd love to get rid of Marion. But if I'm not convinced of his value myself, who'd want to take his max contract against their cap? Dallas don't want him as they have Walker, the Rookie all more attractive in contract terms without much difficiency in talent.

That sign-and-trade wouldn't work, because Nash would be a BYC player. The Mavs would only be able to take salaries in return based on Nash's previous $5.5M salary, plus 15% plus $100K, so $6.4M. That's just enough for Eisley. No room for JJ.

Besides, with Finley, Stackhouse, Howard, and Daniels already on the roster, JJ doesn't exactly fit one of the Mavs' greatest needs.

Except for Nash. Nash wanted to stay with Dallas and brought our offer back to Cuban, who refused to match it. I guess Nash isn't a talent.

Yeah, just like Jahidi White was such a great trading asset for us this year.

White wasn't a trading asset because we wanted to have immediate capspace for him not a good overpayed player that a team wants to move.

Exactly! Timing is everything. If you need something urgently, it's gonna cost you. Such is life. With patience, we'd have had not much problem to include White into a trade, say for Shaq. It's all about potential opportunities.
