Negotiating ploy? Or, are the D-Backs really not planning to keep him?
I think he genuinely thinks he's not wanted long term. It sounded sincere on the radio. But I also think the timing of this statement is a great negotiating tactic too.

Perhaps mgt is politely saying the need to count gate receipts and beer sales for the next couple of months to see if they'll have enough left over to pay the electric bill at the end of the season.

I kind of assumed they wouldn't sign Byrnes and Hudson to long term deals, and that they'd keep with the youth movement theme. I'm more OK w/ them letting Byrnes go, as he's having a career season this year and who knows if he can keep it up, and they have lots of OF prospects, but Hudson I'd rather them keep. Callaspo isn't going to replace a .300 hitter and a gold glove anytime soon, neither would Mark Reynolds or anyone else they put at 2nd.

Yeah, strange timing right after making the All-Star game. But if he and his agent are trying to jump-start negotiations I guess this would be one way to do it.

I know we're waiting on a couple more young outfielders to come up, but do we have any blue-chip middle infielders in the farm system?

I keep Hudson because he is still getting better, a gold glover, and a player at a position that the team doesn't have much depth at in the minors.

Is Orlando Hudson even aware that he isn't an unrestricted free agent this summer? Why is he making this comment now when the Diamondbacks still have another 16 months or so to give him another deal?

I heard the interview, he was very candid and polite. Gambo kept pushing the issue.

O-Dog just very matter-of-factly stated that he felt after his arbritration year the D-Backs would go with a younger player in the minors (didn't say who).

He said he wanted to stay, said he loved Toronto and didn't want to leave but he really loves everything about the D-Backs. He wants to retire here. He doesn't want to go anywhere else, but he feels like it will be out of his hands.

He has no interest in breaking the bank, will settle for a mid-level contract that's fair to both parties. He just thinks he won't get an offer.

According to reports, Emilio Bonifacio is believed to be the front runner to replace Hudson if O-Dog is let go. Also reportedly in the mix are Mark Reynolds and Alberto Callaspo.

To me, it's a no brainer.. You cannot replace this guy's Gold Glove caliber defense in the middle infield and cannot replace the veteran leadership he brings to the team. Although I'm all for the full blown youth movement, Hudson at 28 is the one "vet" I think Arizona should keep.

Even though he is playing OF in the minors wasn't the original plan to put Upton at either SS or 2B to team with Drew.

O-Dog has become the heart of the team. JMO, he's a big drawing card, as much as anyone on the team.
