The Giants have given RE Osi Umenyiora permission to seek a trade, according to ESPN's Sal Paolantonio.
Despite reporting to the Giants Sunday, Umenyiora remains an unhappy camper. He wants a new contract or a trade, and the G-Men are apparently willing to accommodate the latter thanks to their impressive defensive end depth. Umenyiora wouldn't bring back a large haul as whatever team trades for him would also have to pony up a pile of cash in a long-term contract.
Don't see that happening with the Cardinals!Giants are looking for a first round pick and he'd want a monster contract.
Disgruntled RE Osi Umenyiora claimed GM Jerry Reese told him in 2008 that if he was still playing at a high level in two years, he'd be rewarded with a new contract.
Umenyiora made the claim in a sworn affidavit as part of the Brady vs. NFL lawsuit during the lockout. "The fact is in the business we are in, if you get injured, or they feel like you underperformed, they cut you without hesitation," said Umenyiora. "But if you clearly outplay your contract, and ask for something to be done, you're a bad guy and not a team player. It's ridiculous." Umenyiora clearly isn't making friends in the front office as he sits on the trading block.
Highly reminiscent of the Boldin scenario.
The Chargers, Seahawks, Broncos, Ravens and Rams have expressed an interest in trading for Osi Umenyiora, sources tell the New York Daily News.
None of these teams appear willing to meet the Giants' asking price of a first-round pick. But if the price is dropped to a second-rounder, the Giants may get someone to bite. The Daily News' sources cite the Rams as the team to watch -- former Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo now coaching in St. Louis.
The Baltimore Sun's Mike Preston reports that the Ravens do have interest in Osi Umenyiora, but not at the Giants' current first-round asking price.
The Sun essentially reported the same thing last week, confirming that the Ravens had shown "preliminary interest" in last year's NFL leader in forced fumbles. The Ravens will hope for the Giants' price tag to come down. You have to remember that Umenyiora won't just cost a high draft pick; he'll require a new contract with a ton of front-loaded money. It's not an easy trade.
Newsday's Tom Rock reports DE Osi Umenyiora will be traded by the end of the week.
Newsday's articles are behind a pay wall, so the details are unclear. The Seahawks, Ravens, Broncos, Chargers, and Rams were named as suitors in a previous report, and we've also seen the Browns mentioned as a candidate. Umenyiora's agent has had contract with 21 teams. It's still hard to imagine any team meeting the Giants' first-round asking price.
A league sources tells the Baltimore Sun that the asking price for Giants DE Osi Umeyiora has dropped to a second-round pick.
The same source confirms that five teams are in the hunt, including the Ravens and Patriots. Several members of the Ravens front office are urging GM Ozzie Newsome to pull the trigger, but he's reportedly concerned about Umenyiora's history of hip and knee injuries. Newsome also has salary cap issues to consider with Ray Rice and Joe Flacco in line for extensions. Signing Haloti Ngata to a long-term deal would helping free up space, lowering his 2011 salary. NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora adds the Falcons to the list of teams interested in Umenyiora at the right price.
ESPN's John Clayton suggests the Seahawks could package TE John Carlson with a draft pick for Giants DE Osi Umenyiora.
This is putting the cart before the horse. As far as we know, the Giants have not turned the page on free agent Kevin Boss. "They can fit Carlson in and maybe try to work out something later with [Boss]," Clayton said. "It's just one of those options that are there." It sounds like obvious dot-connecting, though Clayton, NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora, and the New York Daily News have all connected the Seahawks to Umenyiora.
Osi Umenyiora will head to Atlanta to have a specialist check out the knee injury that has kept him from practicing.
The visit is "to see if we can get him on the field," agent Tony Agnone says. Umenyiora reportedly has no plans to take the field until he gets a contract extension. We wouldn't expect to see him practicing even if the specialist gives him the green light.
