LONDON -- San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith will miss Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos in London because of a separated left shoulder.

Head coach Mike Singletary said Wednesday that Smith will be sidelined for 2 to 3 weeks and Troy Smith will start for the Niners (1-6) at Wembley Stadium.

"Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win this game," Singletary said. "He has enough of the offense to play."

Alex Smith was injured on a sack in the third quarter of last Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers. David Carr replaced him, but was passed over for this weekend's game.

This is a little weird on the post game show on Comcast locally here they were talking about how rusty Carr looked and one of the "Experts" said they should start Nate Davis next week, and another expert pointed out that Davis was cut at the end of preseason, cleared waivers, and was assigned to the practice squad. "So who's the 3rd string QB?"

In other words people that follow them for a living didn't even know Troy Smith was #3.

I'd say he's more like black Derek Anderson w/ mobility.

Dude has a 53% completion. He does have more TDs than picks, but I believe that's about to change in San Fran.

Completely different players. Hall in his career at BYU ran for about 200 yards, Smith ran for nearly 1200 yards in 3 seasons at TOSU.

Then there's the wunderlich test, Smith had a 15, one of the lowest scores in his draft . Max had one of the highest scores in his draft with a 38, he had the 3rd highest at the combine.

But they are the same general height and both are right handed.

How do the two things you just said equal each other? Troy Smith has been tossed by his drafting team.. Troy almost got dumped by the 49ers when Trent Edwards became available.. But the Jags sucked worse at the time and got him.. Troy won the Heisamn which is the kiss of death.. Look back on Heisman winners and who is a pro bowler or HOFer.. the past 20 years aint kind.. Max Hall is a rookie, and we have yet to know what he can do.. Not saying he is gonna be the world beater.. But your ass just dont know.. I wish youd quit jinxing our team with stupid crap..

I mean we were are all hurt Leinart didnt pan out.. Alot of us put faith in him.. But there comes in everyones life you need to move on.. If people get stuck in the past, it aint mine or anyones fault.. All we trying to do is cheer on the Cardinals.. I dont have time for BS trying to live in the past from a player that obviously didnt care enough himself to suceed with us.. If he does it somewhere else, more power.. As long as he aint Simeon Rice talking mess in the process..

I too have Troy Smith rated as the best 3rd String QB in the league. Him and Matt Leinart are basically 1A and 1B for the "Captain Clipboard" award that I annually give to the best third string QB.

Thesis

I seem to get dog piled as an SOB just for stating a fact. having fun at my expense has become its own sport. I'm ok with that but at some point fans or Whiz have to admit this fiasco was the stupidest thing they ever witnessed!

I was a Browns fan prior to the Cards coming to AZ. I've seen me some terrible football teams, underachievers, overachievers cardiac, wild cards
now if I was wrong I would admit(and have) but sorry never did anything for anyone.

until proved otherwise on the field, i will not change my grade on matty. He played elite with no run game, blocking and didn't make first downs or TD's. But He outplayed every other Cardinal this preseason, and Coach Whiz limited his snaps and did everything humanly possible to put Matt in a position to fail.

With friends like that who needs enemies. What is tragedy for the Cardinals is heaven for matty, Whiz has turned into a Tyrant, who players can't talk too effectively. Its a one way street heading the wrong way.

I gotta hope Whiz will reach down a correct it but I have no trust and faith anytime soon. just like the media in 08, facts spewing from every pore in their body, some fans just waller in frothy emotional appeal.
