http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10012596/fritz-pollard-alliance-asks-nfl-players-end-n-word-use

The Fritz Pollard Alliance, an influential group that promotes diversity and job equality in the NFL, called on players Thursday to stop using the N-word on the field after highly publicized incidents involving the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins.

The Alliance also has called on the league to punish players who use the racial slur on the field through immediate ejections and subsequent fines, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Can't wait to see the hand signal the refs have to use when explaining this penalty. Thoughts? Considering how they penalize for other stuff (going to the ground to celebrate, using the football as a prop), this isn't that much of a reach for the NFL.

I'm all for it. No place for that word to be slung around on the field. Don't matter what color you are either!

I disagree that "civilians" should regulate speech in institutions they know nothing about. That goes for Police, Firemen, the Military, and NFL locker-rooms (to name just a few). I'm quite positive if the average citizen heard military talk from a bunker in Afghanistan they'd probably want to regulate that too. Or police-officers talking when chasing the marathon bomber in Boston. Or firefighters talking after several of their comrades have died from some asshat starting a fire. If you're not there, you don't know.

Most of us are so ignorant about these situations that we should just keep our mouths shut. The average citizen is awesome at dictating other people's behavior, when they can't even regulate their own pathetic lives.

On the field? C'mon guys this isn't North Korea. Where does this all end? Gotta draw the line somewhere. I'm staying far away from the debate of the word itself, but you have to stop trying to contol the players.

This is a pretty fantastic take, if a little judgmental in and of itself. You all to hang out in a professional kitchen sometime as well. Some of the best people with the filthiest mouths and minds. The external, completely out of context judgement of a person based on "media" reports HAS to stop.

I too however agree, that most of this talk should stop, too. Too bad, cause its fun pretending to be a sexist, homophobic, racist prick sometimes.

Penalize it on the field? No. But players should police themselves. Tell me, if a word is so offensive that to utter it can cost someone their job(Paula Deen anyone?) then how can you justify using it as a "term of endearment"? As an American of Italian descent, we don't go around calling each other ***'s or Dego's or some other derogatory term with affection. If the N word is truly the most offensive slur in history then perhaps the community if affects the most should be the first to not use it. Am I wrong here? I don't think I am.

The voice of reason right here!!!!

I personally dont care what they are calling each other on the field. Those guys are all big boys. I doubt they take anything from an opponents mouth to heart and walk to the sideline with their head down because the word(s) just deflated all their confidence. I highly doubt this ever happens.

I pulled some old videos from 15+ years ago when I was in the service. I had a bunch of cool stuff to show my kids (who werent alive when I wore the uniform) and I was shocked to hear my own mouth. Believe me, I am no angel today (I'm a firefighter now), but I was a whole lot worse back then. My kids just giggled throughout, and they were saying "oh my gosh dad, you used a lot of bad words!" Looking back, I remember my mouth turning various people off, and I subsequently changed my language. I work around some very religious folks now and again, so I try to be extra cognizant around them just out of respect. A lot still slips through the filter, but even then many of these folks let me slide out of respect for who I am.

As a white guy, I would be highly intimidated to use the N word on an NFL field for fear of getting ear holed or taking cheap shots in retaliation. But if this is how the boys talk to each other in their society, who cares???? Let them work it out on their own. I dont sit low enough to hear it anyway (assuming I were to give a damn).

Negro and Fornicate? But seriously, I don't use the derogatory term of negro but use the *#&$ out of the "F" word. And so what? An individual knows or can feel out the crowd he is with. "F" means to fornicate or procreate yet the word is very much offensive to a lot of folks. Why? "N" is offensive to an entire race.

its been a long time in the process but rugged individualism has been replaced by it takes a village,

and the destruction of language by emotionally charged groups trying to build a consensus that is phony but seems to show support for hurting peoples feelings over words like n*gger or f#ck is a centerpiece of the control that these freaks relish,

I keep thinking of the 4th monkey! speak no evil- hear no evil- see no evil- became famous with Nixon- But I wanted to see a 4th monkey with his hands over his AZ!

that would be the refs hand signal on the call!

The Washington Correctness football team!

I believe in free speech- but with that- individuals need to police themselves!
It is sad that that folks show so little respect for themselves - regardless of others -

In my culture Work or otherwise- I don't use the N Word in any context. Some others do and I hear it on songs, and it never looks good on them- through my eyes any how. The world has changed to being much much closer to Rev King's dream in my lifetime- not perfect but America leads the world or at least places I've been.

Phoenix leads the country- unlike other cities with segregated China Towns and such- from the center of Phoenix out 25 miles in all directions- every major and most minor cultures, countries and religions - are living door to door and able to worship openly and freely within our laws- I celebrate that!

I mean no women stoning's occur - no sacrifices beyond food- that I know of? A co worker shared with me where the word picnic came from within the last month- hell I didn't know that, but now I'm trying not to say it!

Sometimes I resent the hijacking of my childhood language- like when Gay and Queer meant happy and strange - but I was aware enough to laugh when I smoked a *** with British soldiers in the early 80's.

It seems many want to brand themselves or their product with such language. Make some money, I don't want to be branded with such negativity - mind, body or soul. Shakespeare did he was quite vulgar for his day, seemed to work out well for him- others lost their heads!

so with freedom comes responsibility - I love all of America her good and her bad.

I kinda agree. I'm baffled that they call each other the N word, but no one else can? Even on twitter messages, that's how they refer to themselves. AND they intend it to be derogatory!

DeAnna, don't try to comprehend it. It really just can't be explained in a few words. ;)

Couldn't agree more. Just plain silly. In a discussion, all parties know what it actually is. Possibly if the actual words were used during the discussion, it would be more effectual as a deterrent.

The F word to me is ******.

got something against little pieces of wood Jon??

when I played ball we would say pretty much anything to try and get under the other guys skin...get in his head,..throw him off his game...the psychological attack is a part of sports and competition

IMO you cannot allow the officials to police what is said on the field...you start with this,...but then where does it end?...it doesn't...give the inch and soon you will be looking back over a mile.
