Refs need to be held accountable for making sure coaches and players that are not involved in the play are behind the white hash and between the two 25 yard markers. It is a 15-yard penalty, according to the rules, and Jones could've been awarded a touchdown in that particular situation.

It starts with levying a huge fine on Tomlin and giving that referee a demerit, and hopefully this is something that is monitored a bit more meticulously.

Collectively, the officiating in the NFL this season has been abysmal.

I don't have the data on it, so this is totally a subjective opinion.

The replacement refs were really not much worse than the full time refs. At least they were not biased in throwing flags in games involving marquee opponents like the Packers, Cowboys and Pats. Yeah, they blew some calls. But these guys also blow calls in every game.

I believe the flak given to the replacement officials was union orchestrated. With the exception of that blown call in that Monday night game, I didn't think they did any worse than the regular officials. As was said, this season the officiating has reached new lows and the game I reference was full of bad calls.

Had Jones ran it in for a TD, and the flag were thrown, then the TD would be erased and the pentaly enforced (15 yards from the spot)

So imagine the uproar if a TD had be revoked because of this

Fine/suspend Tomlin, but its not a big deal. Jones was getting caught no matter what. "Alter his path"? Had Jones not flinched a muscle, he still wouldnt have run into Tomlin. The guy running him down was catching him regardless.

Had Jones scored but a flag thrown, Baltimore would have taken the TD and declined the penalty unless there's some "you must accept the penalty or else" rule we don't know about. Also, if he wouldn't have scored, he would have gotten at least 15 yards further.

To pile on the bad officiating during the Stealers/Ravens game, during Jacoby Jones' near kickoff return, apparently Mike Tomlin was on the field and caused Jones to alter his path allowing the defender to catch up with him. Of course this all happened in front of an official who actually had to run around Tomlin but never threw the flag. http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-steelers-mike-tomlin-jacoby-jones-20131129,0,2666077.story#axzz2m6bpyKzs

I swear, if Tomlin has a habit of coming onto the field and the Steelers where on my schedule...then I would tell my players to plow his arse over if he gives them the chance. You will never see Tomlin do that again, and the refs could not flag you for it either :)

I am good with the fine and doubt they take a real pick (maybe a 7th rounder if any) but he should definitely be removed from the rules committee. You can't have a guy that cheats in such a visible way weighing in on what the rule changes should be. It discredits the legitimacy of the committee and that is actually one of the more prestigious committees to be on. That would be like having Bilichek on there.

I know right. It is like every defensive holding or defensive offside call that negates a TD pass. They should make a rule that allows a team to delcine those penalties. Or even worse, like when a offensive holding call turns a 15 yards sack into a 1st and 20 instead of a 2nd and 25.

Agree 100% Reddog, I am a little disappointed that Coach Tomlin doesn't get to sit out a game as I believe his actions were intentional & that can't make the Rooneys very happy, especially going forward.

You can decline offensive holding... It is just rarely ever done.

Sorry but that wasn't intentional.

Did he intentionally try to disrupt play? Probably not.

Did he intentionally stand too close to the field, and not pay attention? Maybe, maybe not.

But if unintentionally run a red light, and ram into your car, because I was looking at my cell phone, am I going to still get a ticket?

And he got his ticket in the form of a $100K ticket and still the possibility of a lost draft pick. No need to suspend him as well.

I never said he didn't deserve the fine did I? But calling him a "cheater" is a bit much. That would imply a purposeful intent. I don't believe he had one thus not cheating. Just a mistake. One he shouldn't make for sure and he will pay for it.

Funny thing is, he has had issues with this before - Joe Flacco has complained about him

No one is supposed to be in the white area - that is considered off limits to non-players.

Hell, the ref had to run around him. He saw him coming.

AND, the NFL has just sent a video/memo to all teams and coaches warning them to stay out of the white area.

And? Still not cheating. I see MANY coaches ignore this rule regularly. Hes been slapped its a done deal.

If you continually violate/ignore a rule, and gain an advantage, it is cheating.

I guess it is a matter of interpretation. Tomlin is one of the most meticulous coaches around. He is a perfectionist and is on the rules committee and has to know the rules. Just given the circumstances and his actions and reaction after the player went by maybe he had a momentary brain lapse or acted out subconscious frustration or impulses by crowding the field but he surely knew what he was doing.

Did Woody Hayes know the rules of society and the football field when he couldn't control himself and took a swing at the Clemson player? Of course. Would he like that one back? Probably. I have no doubt Tomlin didn't accidentally step on the field in front of the returner. No way. I coached youth football for ten years and even at that level your position on the sideline is hammered into your brain by the refs so no way an NFL coach is unaware of his surroundings on the sideline.

This wasn't Tomlin's first time disrupting a play in progress. He deserves his $100,000 fine in my book!

Now that is funny.

BTW, anyone wonder why he had his back to the play? His excuse that he was watching the jumbotron during the actual play seems absurd. He has the best seat in the house with an unobstructed view and he chooses the live Jumbotron?
