It's very sad that this man died. Cant imagine to be the family to say goodbye to someone who is excitedly going to a ballgame, and hours later learning they died AT THE BALLGAME,,, how surreal.
How many people patronize the upper decks of stadiums and arenas in American professional sports every year? How many of those (what I'm guessing is hundreds of thousands, maybe millions?) fall accidentally to their deaths each year? I searched on google a little, but wasn't getting anywhere as far as broad, overview stats.
As far as changing the upper deck,,, we cant just react to every tragedy with immediate action. What the NHL did was super admirable, but it was necessary, there was a clear need. When that young girl died everyone was like, WTF why dont we have nets this is insane?!?!?! What were we thinking??? If you're a hockey fan and a little black rock is screaming at you at 100+mph, you are pretty defenseless. I mean even if you SEE it and duck it could still hit you and if it hits you it's going to hurt you. That's not the same as falling off the upper deck, I mean, I go to a lot of sporting events, I have yet to fall off the upper deck.
I don't mean to seem indelicate but we cant make everywhere that people go in the world 100% safe. People just need to be more careful. Let's not be overly reactionary about this just because someone got a little carried away and fell. My sincerest condolences to his family though. Very tragic and sad accident. So terrible.
The world is a dangerous place and bad stuff happens. You can fall down an escalator or a flight of stairs and die just as easily. That has happened in stadiums several times over the years, should we get rid of all the stairs next?
However, on the foul balls, yes I'm totally in, extend the nets!!! People can still catch foul balls but they will be the high ones that dont fall with much velocity, what we need to eliminate are the 120mph line-drive screamers that are hurting people. I mean if there is an 80 year old woman sitting in the stands are we honestly expecting her to move, or defend herself from a 120mph baseball?? Put a net up the height of the backstop all the way to the foul pole and I think you've done more than enough.
