Where this really hurts the Cardinals (if they were really targeting a free agent CB) is that two of the best corners (him and the Colts guy) are off the market before the market even opened. That's drives up the price for second tier guys like McFadden or Foxworth who become the best guys on the market now.

Make that three top free agent corners off the market. Dunta Robinson of the Texans got tagged earlier today.

3 years $45 mill according to ESPN. I like him but not at that price.

It's brilliant by the raiders. It's stupid by Asomugha, IMO. He should have tried to test FA or taken the tag. JMHO

The deal supposedly makes him the highest paid DB ever. I don't blame him for taking it.

I wouldn't call this brilliant by the Raiders. They basically money-whipped him to death. Look at these contract details:
The first two years, worth $28.5 million, are fully guaranteed. In the third year of the contract, if Oakland wants to keep Asomugha, it must pay him the average of the top five highest-paid quarterbacks (not to be confused with corner backs) or $16.875 million — whichever is greater. If the Raiders fail to pick up the option, Asomugha will become a free agent, with Oakland not having the ability to tag him again.
I can't imagine any player being able to say no to a deal like that. That's insane and no one outside of crazy Al Davis would give any player, regardless of position, 28.5 million for two years fully guaranteed. Complete insanity and Schefter even hints that the league might not approve the deal.

Plus to make it even better for NA, he'll still be 29 (if the two year option plays out) or 30 (if he makes it all three) when the contract is up and be in line for another monster contract. Then again, maybe Al Davis will offer the contract and then cut him eight games into the season.

I still think it's a good move by the raiders. Asomugha helps that defense immensely. Right now, they can't attract a FA to that team through any means OTHER than vastly overpaying, so they need to put a product on the field that will make them attractive.

He's the best corner in the league playing on the worst team in the league. If I were him, I'd rather take a few million less to play with guys that are playing for a championship instead of playing out their contracts. It sure would make work a lot more fun. JMHO

I was going to post on how we still might be able to trade for him, but I wouldn't want him for that much $. Oh well, maybe we can find another CB option. Lito Sheppard anyone?

WAAAIIIT A SECOND...Where are the Raiders getting all this cap space? They just made two players the highest paid players ever at their position, but they had only $4mil in cap space when I last checked, which was two weeks ago.

And with all this spending, how do they plan on bringing in incredibly overrated FAs and overpay them millions upon millions?

Does this deal affect the franchise tag number for CB's this season or next?

Just kills me how so many criticize the Raiders (and every other organizaion for that matter) given the ineptitude of your FO the last couple of decades.

And before I read, "yeah, but we went to the superbowl this year," count the number of rings Oakland has compared to us.

At least we're moving forward and they've been in a horrific reverse since their last super bowl. And those rings are 25 years or older, when Al Davis wasn't a senile hag.

:mulli:

Everyone who'd rather have Al Davis over the Cardinals front office raise your hand?

Ineptitude of the home team's FO does not eliminate the ability of fans to criticize decisions made by other teams. That kind of silly, really. I mean, the Rams have been totally dysfunctional for almost a decade... maybe that takes away John Shaw's prerogative to criticize, say, Matt Millen, but why on earth would it take away MY prerogative to do so?

Also, in a league in which players can be reviled a year after winning the MVP and Super Bowl winning coaches of several years back are fired while the fans say good riddance, why on earth should Al Davis be the one guy whose past accomplishments don't have an expiration date?
