Watched Australian Rules Football last night on Fox Sports World.

Very similar to a cross between Rugby and Soccer, if you were to use your hands.

But they have to do away with those gay uniforms. My wife kind of liked it, but I felt like I was watching gay soccer or something.

Differences I saw between this & Rugby, - No scrums, no lineouts, no putting into touch, field is a big ass oval, and goals are scored by strictly kicking through goal posts. They also have scoring for something like Back Beyonds or something like that.

The goal judges are pretty gay too - they wea these sun hats and white jackets and when a goal is scored, they look like they are Quick Draw McGraw shooting at someone.

Anyone else ever watch this?

Ohh Man!

You did it! You had to say it. Aussie Rules football SUCKS! IT plain and simple sucks!

It is another game were you HAVE TO BE fast, and be able to jump. And it is stupid, and you can't hit really hard. THere are no line outs, or scrums, or anything cool.

YOu see Rugby can be played by anyone. You got to be able to run for a long time, and be able to get back up when you have been hit. THat is it. You don't have to be strong, you don't have to be fast. There is a spot on a Rugby field for everyone to play.

The last thing we need is another sports based on if you are fast or if you are tall. Stupid.

HATRED!

I love Aussie Rules. In my opinion, it is the second greatest TV spectator sport in the world, after American football of course.

It IS very similar to soccer, in the way people run to get open and the way they pass it up the field to target players.

Pretty simple rules, too. Much easier to understand than Rugby (and much more exciting, too - they actually can run and pass forward).

You can learn the basic rules by watching one game. I highly recommend it.

I watched last night Aussie Rules and I watch it whenever I can. It is a cool game. Big hits are not common but they do happen. I wonder, with the way these guys are able to kick the ball, why we don't see more of them hopping across the Pacific to kick in the NFL. Didn't Bennett (SD) play Aussie Rules?

I also like Rugby (more difficult for me to understand) and am looking forward to catching some of the Tri-Nations Rugby. Is it being replayed at sane hours for those of us with kids or should I tape it tonight?

I seriously don't like it just because you HAVE TO BE FAST.

I am not. So can't play. I just think there are enough games out there centered around speed.

I just like rugby because no matter who you are, or what you can do that there is a place for you on the field. Everybody can play! I think that is one of the coolest things about rugby.

But I will admit it can be boring to watch if the backs on both team stink! But talk about hitting people. BOOOOOOOOM ! Out of nowhere type hits!

By the way Cardinal Ken is a prop if I have ever seen one!

Rugby, sorry but I don't share your enthusiasm for playing Rugby but then playing over here you have never had the full awful experience.

Imagine the scene:

It's a cold, damp late November morning in England, basicly miserable weather.

There you are minding your own business in the in the school main hall hepling your friend to dismantle a scaffolding tower. This "friend" (now of 35+ years aquaintance) proceeds to drop connecting pole (20lbs of steel pole) on you from 20ft. It comes down verticaly and slides by your face close enough to minutly chip one of your teeth. By now you can see this is not a good day.

The Background Info:

At 18 I'd spent the last 6 years avoiding things like soccer, cricket and rubgy. But since I'd last played them I had taken up racing sailboats and rock climbing in a big way. Net result was I'd gone from class wimp as 12 to lb for lb one of the stronger guys in the school.

The Disaster:

2 mins after playing footsie with a steel pole so guy comes by and issues the line "We need an extra body for house 7's (7 a side Rugby that is)", my response being, "It can't be worse than getting steel bars dropped on you"

So they found me some "kit" unfortunatly it was more suited to working out than Rugby in November (but still better than steel bars) and I trot on to the field.

Unfortunatly history caught up with me, like I said I hadn't played in several years and was rather muscular even at 5' 8" tall.

So when the 6' 3" guy runs past me with the ball I stopped him, nailed him good, flat on his back, no problem. As he worked on standing up, everybody else had to sit on him while he calmed down explaining that I had not played in years.

Apparently clotheslining people is not allowed and he was pissed. Apparently he was not keen on being upended like that.

Do not beleive him, being in a scrum is not fun, at least not the way it is played in England. Most prop forwards play the way Dick Butkus did in a pile, ie , bite, kick and gouging are the name of the game. :D

Well I guess you are right it is not for everyone.

But this:

THat above is B.S. YOu did nothing wrong my friend. It is freaking rugby! IF you are gonna complain about being hit to hard then don't play. This guy was being a Class A "small cat". If you are going to play rugby expect to be hit, cleated, bitten, punched, clothelined, body splashed, and everything in between. But you don't go kcik the poop out of people if they do these things. It is part of the game. Buddy if I was there I would have stood up for you.
It IS illegal to tackle around the neck or higher, but when people duck (which they shouldn't be doing in the 1st place) they are going to be hit in the neck or the head.

THe most important thing to do if you play rugby is to learn the game, how to play correctly, and play safe. It sounds like you did those things but you met up with A. an @sshole, or B. and crappy Rugby team. DO you at least hit him really hard! hehehehe POP!

And I LOVE scrums. Nice and warm. As for Props, well I don't even consider them "human". Kind of a man-beast. I still say Cardinal Ken would be a great prop!

That was nearly 30 years ago but it was a really bad day.

November morning in a thin (and by now) ripped, mud encrusted tee shirt. I still remember the horror but my therapist helps :D

Oh and at 5' 8" guess what fun position I usualy got ?

I'll give you a hint, it's in the middle of the those sub human types in the scrum.

Oh man! They put you at lock?

I would have put you with the backs or made you a wing forward or something.

You remember the sensation of 1 ton of men power being pushed accross your back? Man, I love that !

I used to watch this stuff all the time back in the early 80s....

In fact, that's all ESPN was showing besides Sportscenter and PKA Full Contact Karate.

Kickboxing is not Karate and IMO "Full Contact" is BS. Yes they hit hard but 75% of what I have been taught over the last 25 years you can be used at full strngth under the same rules of engagment as a .357.

Rugby is one of the great sports, bar none. I'll get up at all hours of the night to watch my beloved All Blacks or Otago Highlanders. I only played for a short while years ago in college, until I wrecked my back, but I watch pretty much every match the FSW broadcasts.

Love it almost as much as our beloved Cards.
