Commanders’ Jonathan Allen wants to have dinner with Hitler: ‘He’s a military genius’

Jonathan Allen, a defensive tackle for the Washington Commanders, listed Adolf Hitler among a trio of people he’d like to have dinner with.

Allen, 27, was doing an “ask me anything” on his Twitter account, and answered a query regarding which three guests he’d invite for dinner.

“My grandad, hitler, and micheal [sic] Jackson,” Allen answered.
Why Hitler?

“He’s a military genius and I love military tactics but honestly I would want to pick his brain as to why he did what he did,” Allen tweeted. “I’m also assuming that the people I’ve chosen have to answer my questions honestly.”

Allen has since deleted his tweets referencing Hitler and apologized.

This blew up just before the Super Bowl. People ripped Allen, rightfully so, and he deleted the tweets referenced in the article.

When will people learn that referencing Hitler in ANY context other than as a reprehensible historical figure (not even going to call him "human") is a bad idea? I know, never.

Hitler's military genius decided to fight a war to 2 opposing fronts...lol If Hitler would have listened to Rommel (the real military genius), WW2 could have had a much different ending, or at the very least a much longer and bloodier duration.

Hitler was a disgusting nutjob, who rose to power by stoking fear and convincing people they should be angry for absolutely nothing.

Rommel was an aggressive, good tactician when he had an open flank to roam but hardly a genius. He was of course proved right in believing that strategic reserves should be closer to the front in Normandy because of his experience in Egypt and Libya when the RAF ruled the skies in the desert campaign. Many in the High Command feared a two-front war. Had Rommel fought on the eastern front we'd have a true measure of his generalship.

Von Manstein is much closer to the definition as a master of both strategy and tactics.

As a sidebar: Churchill vetoed any attempts to assassinate Hitler because he considered his meddling, Corporal's view of strategy and tactics an absolute asset to the Allies.

P.S. I once met an old veteran who told me that he had killed 25 Luftwaffe pilots in WWII.

He was the worst plane mechanic in the German airforce. ;)

yeah, I mean, if you want to have lunch with him to discuss his military tactics, nothing wrong with that.

Calling him a genius is a hell of a stretch though.

???

The attack on Russia (Operation Barbarossa) began on June 22, 1941.

If Hitler had attacked in the Spring rather than spend time and energy dealing with Greece and the Balkans, he may have reached Moscow before the rains of autumn, cold and snow.

The opportunity of invading England died in the skies over England (Battle of Britain) and by 1941 (before American entry into the war) GB was already outstripping Germany in terms of war material production.

Yes, instead of spending time going south to the Russian oil fields before it got cold, that was a huge mistake.

Hitler was a mediocre commander but a genius at political and societal manipulation
Was he though? It doesn’t take a genius to rile up a society that’s in an economic downturn by appealing to their most evil urges using nationalism, and finding scapegoats to blame for their financial ills. He just appealed to human beings lowest common denominator. We’ve seen it time and time again throughout history. Use of fear and anger isn’t genius, it’s the evil playbook 101.

this is true. However, the punitive nature of the Treaty of Versailles after WW1 by the Allies on Germany certainly helped play a factor as well.

This. The Allies' sheer vindictive stupidity created a societal situation uniquely suited to providing fodder for a man like Hitler to point his finger and say, "see, see, THEY'RE to blame." Without the Allies there would have been no Hitler--not to excuse that piece of human feces, of course.
