One source close to the situation told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher that the Magic have promised Howard that they will add a quality player before Thursday's deadline and that Howard can decide the fate of both GM Otis Smith and coach Stan Van Gundy at the end of the season if he signs an extension. Bucks swingman Stephen Jackson, frustrated in Milwaukee, is available and sources say he and Howard have talked about playing together.

God, Florida has the worst owners in sports. They are so fixated on glitz and star power that they complete ignore sensible business sense.

Cleveland treated James the same way. Small market teams are desperate to hang on to their superstars.

This is really misleading. All I've seen is he's supposedly being given the right to decide their fate. It said nothing about firing the guys.

How else can you interpret "deciding the fate"? Just curious, because I can't see another way to read that.

Sometimes I think I'm funny, most of the time I realize I'm the only one that thinks that. I was suggesting something along the lines of shotguns and a head start.

I think the original report is being misinterpreted. I don't think Howard will be given that much power. It's more likely that him leaving will cause Otis Smith and Van Gundy to be fired. Afterall, his departure would cement Smith's failure as GM, and the new GM would bring in his own coach.

Wow. Orlando is going to lose another top fa for nothing. Dwight has figured out that if he waits until summer, he can go to NJ and they will have more talent around him than if he demands a trade now. He will make up the difference in contract revenue in endorsements.
