Can someone explain this one to me? I am dumbfounded.

Football player who killed man while driving drunk wins “courage” award

.....When Donte’ Stallworth was done with his opening remarks after being introduced as the Ravens’ Ed Block Courage award winner, his eyes were wet. It was an emotional afternoon for Stallworth at the Baltimore Sports Legends Museum in downtown Baltimore, receiving an award voted on by his teammates and given to him for how he has handled his involvement in a terrible tragedy that cost a man his life. “It’s always special to get voted for something by your teammates,” Stallworth said. “Those are the guys that, other than family and guys that have wives and children, you spend the most time with. You really get to know them really well. “I think it really speaks volumes for the guys in the locker room. It really makes me feel good to know that they see the type of person that I am and the type of person that I’m working on to become.” Only a year ago, Stallworth accidentally killed Miami construction worker Mario Reyes when he struck him with his car while driving under the influence of alcohol on a South Beach causeway following a night of partying at glitzy nightclubs. The consequences of that incident were significant, costing a family man his life. Wracked with guilt, Stallworth went to jail for 24 days and was suspended for an entire season by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Since that low point, Stallworth has tried to make amends, apologizing profusely to the Reyes family and giving them a confidential multi-million dollar settlement and sharing his personal story about how a poor decision can change lives in an instant.....

This. Money shouldn't buy you a different justice than the common man......but it does.

I live in Miami so I know this story pretty well.

The reason his punishment was so relatively leniant is because of the undisclosed financial settlement provided to the family of the man he killed. The man was also jay walking so there was culpability on both sides.

Not justifying what happened, but those were the circumstances that led to the lighter punishment. Plus of anyone who has committed such an egregious crime, Donte was one of the most sincerely contrite people in that situation, at least IMO.

From most accounts if he would of hired a good lawyer and fought it he would of walked completely free & clear from the legal system (or something even lighter than the 24 days served)

still don't think I would of given him a courage award or any such thing - even if he has handled the post accident in a very human manner

Maybe because he flashed his lights and honked his horn before creaming him. Also, keep in mind that South Florida is almost like living in the United States, but not quite.

So true, I always worry about going through customs when I leave Miami.

:)

I just wish I could get decent cuban coffee (cafecitos or coladas or whatever they are called) in Chitown.

This brothers in arms thing gets a bit repulsive for me. Seems teammates don't care if a mate rapes women, murders dogs, commits dui murder, et al. UnFB.

He could be a scumbag for all I know but perhaps he was recognized for his owning up to his responsibility and ultimate redemption. We've seen these 'courage' awards go to players who epitomize the best in people or those who have overcome the worst to become a productive caring individual.

Or, it's like those televised music awards, how the hell do I know or even care??? :)

when you remember one of the captains on this team was involved in a murder and got away with it, it's not all that surprising.

Glad you mentioned that. They slurp all over Lewis. He is their mentor.

They'll give this award to any POS in the league.

Here's a few "courage" award winners: Donte’ Stallworth (DUI killer), Michael Vick (dog killer), Leonard Little (DUI killer), Big Ben (alleged rapist), Warren Moon (wife-beater), Brian Blades (manslaughter), etc.

And Plaxio Burgess is still in jail for shooting himself at a nightclub. Money talks and lets you walk.

Yet he is still in jail.
That's because, if I'm not mistaken, he did it in NY...which is the ONE place you don't want to break a gun law (so I've heard...I really have no first-hand knowledge on the subject).

Not to be the only voice of dissent here, but the guy didn't exactly murder the guy. If Stallworth had not been drinking, he would have been guilty of NOTHING. The guy was at fault for his own death.

Stallworth should not have been drinking and driving, but he is no murderer and showed ample remorse for his transgression.

What ever happened to forgiving people and not casting the first stone? Eh, I guess none of you have Jesus in your heart. :)
