Wow look at this:
https://www.nba.com/lakers/roster?ls=nav_extended_team
  • Lonzo Ball (representing his father)
  • Mike Beasley (both of these probably good guys, but still)
  • Isaac Bonga (just the name, never heard of him before)
  • Javal McGee
  • LeBron Janes
  • Rajon Rondon
  • Lance Stephenson
Rodman should be assistant coach or something.

Don't forget to add Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the list. He got a DUI a little while back and didn't go to the court ordered rehab. That doesn't sound all that bad until it was revealed he was on work release while playing with the Lakers and not allowed to leave the state of California. So he was unable to play the majority of road games for a month and even though he was in the NBA, he had to report back to prison every night.

I know athletes get in legal trouble all the time but that was the first time I've heard of a player being on work release during a season. He had to wear an ankle bracelet while playing. Here's a link to an article from Sports Illustrated that talks about it. Even though he dealt with that last year, the Lakers still resigned him for this upcoming season.

It is the strangest collection of free agents I've ever seen. Each player, other than Lebron, is a fair bet to blow up sometime during the season. OTOH, what if they each come through and play to their potential? I don't see it happening but that could be a legit contender if it does.

It's weird, we said the same thing when we got Beasley. What if... What if he played up to his potential.

Here's something to enjoy while we're waiting for Oct 01:

The difference for me is that, embarrassingly enough, when we first signed him I actually thought Beasley might play up to his potential. I highly doubt that group of Lakers will shine, it's far more likely they'll explode. But if the stars align just right and the unicorns and wood sprites come out to dance, wow.

Don't worry. I also secretly hoped/believed Beasley could turn it around in Phoenix.

Here's another video. My man Doom Boom. Those were the days.

I subscribed to Pontel VHS videos at the time. Got 1 1/2 games in the post each week. Was always hoping KJ was healthy and excited about watching Dumas grow each game. He had a pretty good finals series versus those other dudes in red and white.

Eh I’m not so sure. That’s a collection of talented, but whacked personalities. Even if they don’t flip out though, the talents are somewhat odd fits in today’s nba, and particularly surrounding lebron. Not much three point shooting in that clank crew. How they effectively space around lebron seems potentially troublesome.

I've seen the Lakers referred to as "The King and his Jesters". I'm not a fan of the "King James" nickname for Lebron but that is a fitting way to describe the team as a whole. I feel bad for Luke Walton. I would be surprised if he makes through the entire season.

There isn't a high volume 3 point shooter among them but most of the new guys (along with KCP) have better than average percentages from deep. Lance might be the worst of their perimeter players and he shoots 30% for his career, which is only slightly less than desired. But spacing might be less an issue as I wouldn't be surprised to see them turn back the clock and try to play bully and iso ball supported by physical defense.

I am surely looking forward to meeting them four times this year. We've got to get at least 2-2, right? Right?

Yeah... they've still got LeBron. He could probably drag a rec league team from GCU to 41 wins... which I think he basically did last year in Cleveland.

Anyone see Tristian Thompson proclaim the Cavs as "the team to beat" in the East?

Aaaaahahahahahahahahaha!!!

That team won't win 30 games.

I went to college with a hardcore Laker fan who lives in Orange County now. Trying to convince him to buy tickets with me for the December 2nd game at Staples.

I thought i saw a headline somewhere that said the Cavs were still the team to beat in the east? (Didn't read it, just saw the headlines)

You just know the Cavs will get the #1 pick for the 5th time this season.
