Man dies after falling off structure outside of University of Phoenix Stadium

http://www.abc15.com/news/region-we...g-off-university-of-phoenix-stadium-structure

A construction worker is dead after falling from a stage being built in a parking lot outside the University of Phoenix Stadium for a Super Bowl event, the NFL Tailgate Party.

Crews responded to reports of a workplace injury just after noon on Wednesday. When crews arrived they found a 31-year-old man had fallen from a structure, police said.

The man suffered serious injuries, was treated at the scene, but was later declared dead at an area hospital, police said.

McCarthy said the man fell approximately 25-30 feet. He declined to release any additional information.

The employee has not been identified.

Heard about this late last night from a facebook friend. Rigger whose nickname was "Scrappy." Story is that "he had a seizure, had not clipped in, fell about 50 feet, and landed on a ballast."

rip whoever you are.

Edit: confirmed not my buddies but a fellow rigger they worked with. Sad day.

Apologies for being a dick. But people die every day. Women and children die in a far greater majority than any other demographic. Poverty, starvation, domestic violence. All day, every day. Nobody blinks. Some dude falls off a beam and it's news.

That's all well and good, but the men working on this are local hires and many people here have worked with or know these workers. The late poster "O" worked the Super Bowl in Tampa and many events all over the country - and right here in our own back yard - doing lighting for concerts, trade shows, and other events. I currently work with a guy who did rigging for many years (and likely knew R.L. aka Scrappy) and have another co-worker that is a music teacher and personally knew THIS man who died.

He wasn't "some dude". He was someone's son and possibly someone's dad or husband. He was killed at the stadium we go to as fans of the Cardinals.

We blink on this one, at least some of us do, because this one is close to home. RIP and condolences to the family.

Everyone is someone's son and possibly a dad or husband. Did you know him? BIM's comment has some merit, but yours is merely sentimental. Lots of people die, like I said, and which, frankly is obvious and not controversial.

You act all indignant toward me, but you probably didn't even know the dude or anyone he knew. His death won't mean anything in your life. Nothing. Yet you spew platitudes and act self righteous.

Did you just feel like disrespecting the dead today or something?

The guy was a coworker and good friend of a close friend of mine as well. Not that it matters.

I know this may get me some flack however I understand where Darkside is coming from. Certain deaths are highly publicized because of the situation, location, or event its tied to. I think what Darkside is saying is there are many others out there that die every day and nobody even notices it. I think he questions why some of these deaths get so much publicity and other don't even get mentioned in the obituaries.

Don't get me wrong I feel for the family of this young man and at 31 he is young. I think Darkside is saying that it's sad this young man died and questions the outpouring of empathy that is given to him yet there are others out there that die just as tragic if not more tragic deaths and no one gives them a second thought.

any thread you post about someone dying I will probably say:

That sucks, RIP.

If you dont tell me they died, I dont know.

So yes, some deaths we hear about, some we dont. Doesn't mean we should disrespect the death of those we do hear about right?

whatever though, no skin off of my back.

This is the sort of commentary you keep to yourself and it certainly doesn't belong here. If you feel the need to "be a dick", go find somewhere else to do it.

I don't think there are any winners, losers, rights or wrongs in this situation. For me it's just plain sad.

This man got up every morning to make a better life for himself and perhaps his family. Not everyone has the ability to sit in an office or do a job that is not dangerous...somewhere he has family out there that has to deal with this....and for that I believe this should not be disrespected. RIP

gamebird, I agree. I just saw the story on the Phoenix mom who lost her life after delivering quadruplets. I felt so bad for her and her family, and although total strangers, I had a profound sense of sorrow over this unfortunate situation and felt compelled to post on this thread. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I sincerely care about my fellow man whether I know them or not, It's just the kind of person I am. I know deaths happen every day, but if you stop for one moment an consider that some one is sad over that loss, it kind of ties things together as far as what life is about IMO. Compassion for each other is what separates us from animals. Caring when someone loses a life is just part of my makeup.
