How's that Crabtree pick working out for ya?

I hafta to laugh at the travails of the Niners with Michael Crabtree and his agent Eugene Parker. PFT NBC Sports has a story up about the stare down between Parker/Crabtree and San Francisco. Good stuff!

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ontract-continues-to-paralyze-multiple-picks/

Meanwhile, there's no indication that Crabtree and the 49ers are any closer to a deal. There's a theory making the rounds that Parker might have promised Crabtree that he'd be a top-five pick, and that Parker's last-ditch effort to make good on that guarantee might be to get Crabtree paid as if he had been picked in that range.

Regardless of what happens next (and, frankly, given Crabtree's boast that he can run a 4.4 on crutches, we're not ruling out a decision to re-enter the draft in 2010), it's a huge mess. And while it could all end at any moment, there's no reason to think that that moment is coming any time soon.

Don't do that, the Cards have had their share of nasty first round holdouts.
Glass houses and all...
but we can take quiet comfort in the fact that there'll probably be an ill-prepared rook to take advantage of on opening day.

It is sooooooooo nice to not have to deal with a top ten draft pick for the second year in a row. Now we know how the other half lives. ;)

Eh, I guess the 49ers were prepared for this when they went on record and said they weren't expecting a big year from Crabtree!
Awesome!
Crabtree might want a top five contract from the 49ers, but he ain't getting it. It would be stupid for the 49ers to give him that type of contract......:)....imo

He will eventually sign and all will be happy. Stuff like this happens all the time. I'm just glad that its not happening to the Cards this year as it has in the past.

Maybe he'll sign before the first game and will be in the starting lineup out of desperation. DRC would feast that day!

3 thoughts on the article:

1. This is OUTSTANDING that it is happending to the 49ers

2. Eguene Parker is a dousche, and what he is doing is bad the sport and with an uncapped year next year could start a horrible theme for signing Draft picks..

3. This could be EXCACTLY what the NFL needs to institue Rookie Cap/Slotting position rules, and if it could happend at the 49ers expense of losing Crabtree, I would be THRILLED!

Anyone know if there is a deadline for the Niners to sign him before they lose his rights? Also, with the whole uncapped year thing.. I'm glad we have our rookies under contract.. imagine if other rookies followed the trend..

Honestly it really isnt a story IMO. Its the same drama that happens with top 10 picks every year. Same tactics by the agent and the team for the last ten years now. We just here about it more because we have more access to info these days.

If he actually does not sign, now thats a story, but the threat of it has been happening for years to many more players/agents then just Crabtree and his agent Parker.

Isn't Aaron Curry (Seattle's #1 pick) still unsigned?

San Francisco 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree is prepared to sit out this season and re-enter the NFL draft in 2010, David Wells, Crabtree's cousin and adviser, said Thursday.

"We are prepared to do it," Wells said. "Michael just wants fair-market value. They took him with the 10th pick and you have Darrius Heyward-Bey [the seventh overall pick by the Oakland Raiders] getting $38 million? This week is crucial. Michael was one of the best players in the draft and he just wants to be paid like one of the best players. This week is very crucial."

Wells said he believes the Niners have made an offer but that it is not acceptable. Wells said Crabtree is ready to start practicing and was held out of OTAs this spring by coaches only for precautionary reasons.

Crabtree, who turns 22 next month, also missed the 49ers' offseason minicamps and their organized team activities while recovering from a foot injury but was a regular presence at team headquarters for rehabilitation and strengthening workouts.

Crabtree caught 97 passes for 1,165 yards and 19 touchdowns last year during his sophomore season at Texas Tech. He finished his collegiate career with 231 receptions, 3,127 yards and 41 TDs.

Another reason for a rookie cap. Although, it can start next year so Crabtree never puts on a 49ers uni. I really hope he slides next year to the 2nd round and gets even less money. At least it will show the agents that they need be more realistic.

Well, we experienced this year after year with draft picks. If this turns into a Wendell Bryant situation, where he doesnt participate in TC and preseason games, I will put money on the fact that Crabtree will amount to nothing in this league

He isn't going to sit out the season. Remember Andre Wadsworth. He want so far as to reenroll at FSU to "pursue his academic career" and lo and behold he ends up signing a deal right before the season opener. There is just too much money on the table for him to sit out especially considering there is no guarantee he would be a top 10 pick next year. I'm just glad we don't have to go through this anymore with the Cardinals. :D
