Niners benching Kaepernick

The 49ers are benching QB Colin Kaepernick for Blaine Gabbert, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and multiple reports. The news was first reported by the Bay Area Sports Guy.
And the Niners continue to unravel.....

For now, Colin Kaepernick's contract includes no more guaranteed $ after 2015. On 4/1/16, his $13.9M salary for 2016 becomes guaranteed. 2m

He'd have to have a huuuuuuuuuge turnaround to avoid being waived in the off-season.

I'm almost bummed out by this, I can't stand the guy but I really liked the idea of the Niners being plagued by him for the next several years.

No chance. His contract is enormous, after he gets waived no one is going to offer him anywhere near that kind of money. He is going to go from potentially earning nearly 80 million over the next 4 years to being on something like a 2 year 10 million dollar deal and fighting to get on the field somewhere.

I don't think Kaep is a bad dude he's just not a starting QB. I can see Belichick using him somehow.

This may be the most amazing decline I have ever seen in any major sports franchise.

The Niners are going to go into next season with:

1. No Head Coach

2. No Quarterback, or quarterback of the future

3. No wide receivers

4. No pass rushers

5. No secondary

That will literally take up to 5 years to become competitive again. Plus anyone that remembers the Niners pre-Harbaugh knows they are not the best franchise when it comes to developing a team.

This is going to be a long turn around.

Not up to him though if SF releases him they don't incur any penalty they were smart when they made the deal.

I never did buy into the Kaepernick hype.

Neither did I, when many here were spouting their desires of having Kapernick in Cardinal red, I was saying he didn't have enough history to crown him a QBOF. He didn't have a long enough track record to make me believe he was a long term solution. There have been many QBs in the NFL who have had a decent season or two only to fall by the wayside once he lost the surrounding supporting cast that made him look so good.

It's fascinating how fast he fell apart. That was the thing people locally were always concerned about with him. Did he have the mental makeup to handle being the guy that everyone schemes to stop etc.

Right now there's backlash, the team imploded around him and put him in a bad situation etc. ALl of that is true but the reality is the way he plays you have to design a system for him, like what carolina has done. But when you change coaches and personnel, it's hard to do that, the new coach might have other thoughts. I think in THIS case the GM decided I don't want to do that.

They made the mistake awhile back, they decided to go out and try to get more weapons to throw the ball, the problem is then you HAVE to throw the ball and they found out he's not able to fully use those weapons. The cost of getting those weapons was they had to let other guys go that weakened other areas,.

Now they had the mass retirements etc it's just a total implosion.

To be benched for Blaine Gabbert? That must sting. Gabbert is all kinds of awful. Kaep at one point in his career actually looked like a legit QB, not a star by any stretch, but a guy who deserves to be a starter in the NFL.

As bad as CK has been this season in Gabbert's best season he had a worse QB Rating and his career record is 5-22. The 49ers may just be tanking for that #1 overall pick.

Havent watched much Gabbert. Is his skill set really that bad? Or is it possible he was an a that-bad Jags squad that was forced to try and make him the savior from day 1? Age old question, I know. But there were people pining for him here in the draft.

Not that starting for the same type of steaming pile of turd in SF that he had in JAX is any different... We may never truly know.

He was an inconsistent college passer with good size and a big arm but not much in the way of production. People loved his pre-draft workout but ignored his tape.

I went to a few Jax games when I was living in south Georgia and the guy was awful...like Derek Anderson bad. I hope the 49ers run with him for a couple of seasons.

SF launching their "Worst for First" campaign.

Officially tanking the season for 1st overall pick, which they'll try to parlay into lots of additional high picks over the next few seasons.

Probably their best shot to knock a couple years off of the rebuild process.

Go Cards!!!

When someone is such a dbag on and off the field, it is fantastic to see them just implode.

Hearing that the Jet and 49ers are in trade talks for the Colin. The Jets are down to thier 3rd stringer with Ryan and Geno both out.
