Buster Olney on his blog this morning has some trade rumors about the Padres. He reports that the Padres' recently acquired number one starter James Shields and their closer Craig Kimbrel are both being made available. He says both are expected to be traded before the deadline on July 31st.

The problem is that there's a lot of starting pitchers and closers being made available throughout baseball which has driven demand for Shields and Kimbrel down considerably. As a result the Padres might not get much in return for either of them.

James Shields carried the Padres team early on, both with his pitching and his leadership, but recently scouts have not been as impressed with his performance as he experiences regression. In fact while the Padres thought they got a steal in the offseason now they may have to pay another team to take over his three year contract.

Padres fans have come to expect Justin Upton is as good as gone, and while he may be the best corner outfielder available mid-season his offense dropped considerably in June which could make his trade value plummet as well
.

As predicted - Upton always starts strong, then fades

Shields is owed a LOT of money, just signed that deal this winter. The Pads would have to take next to nothing in return for me to get behind that.

Kimbrel on the other hand is on a pretty decent deal for a guy of his caliber (owed 37 million over the next 3 years but 13 million of that is a team option). What worries me about him is the big jump in ERA this year, despite playing in the pitcher's paradise of Petco. As long as this isn't the start of a downward trend he would go a long way to shore up the pen.

The bigger problem with Kimrel is that the Padres grossly overpaid to get him. They took on BJ Upton's disgusting contract, they sent the Braves Matt Wisler (their top prospect, currently in the bigs with a 4-1 record and a 3.6 ERA), Cameron Maybin, a quality OF, another minor league OF, and a supplemental pick that came out the 41st pick in the draft this year.

I'm sure their GM would like to recoup most of that cost when shipping him out and there i no way I'd get behind that. We'd be talking about taking Kimbrel and BJ Upton and shipping out something like Shipley, Peralta and another quality prospect. Waaaaaaay too much to give up for a closer.

There was a great article on Grandland about what a disaster the Padres are and how bad their GM screwed up.

Its long but a good read. Preller seems like Kevin Towers on steroids. Towers spent 2+ years shipping off prospects in exchange for veterans on bad deals all with very little regard for how the pieces would fit together, Preller seems to have done an equal amount of damage but did it in all of 2 months.

On paper that team was built to make some noise, just hasn't worked out. Looks like built a team of overpaid & overrated players.
