Here are the highlights from the proposal laid out in Sherman's report:

  • Seven teams from each league make postseason
  • Teams with best record in each league get wild card round byes
  • Two other division winners and top wild card team host all games of three-game series in wild card round
  • Two other division winners get to pick their wild card round opponents (during a live broadcast) from three other wild card teams, the top wild card team plays the unpicked team
  • Three series winners and team with a bye advance to divisional round

Another thing about the proposed playoff changes -- they would give a better shot for small-market teams to participate in October, offsetting some of the obvious $ disparity.

I am going to be curious to hear the objections of ⁦‪@BauerOutage‬⁩ and perhaps others, because I don't see a lot of downside to it for fans, players teams. Imagine if you're a Padres fan, behind juggernaut LAD. The changes would generate more hope.

The more that I think about the proposed changes to the playoff format, the more they makes sense. It's an anti-tanking device -- giving more reasons for teams to spend $ and push for a playoff berth, more Oct. hope for players, fans. It could reduce the standings polarization.

That sounds like convoluted horseshite, with the big market teams desperately trying to hold onto their absurdly unfair advantage while pretending to address the problem.

Baseball needs a salary cap, and F the players who don't like it. 400million dollar contracts...... get real. All that happens is four teams collect all the good players, and ticket prices go through the roof.

The Milwaukee Brewers, fresh off consecutive playoff appearances, have trimmed payroll 20 percent. It's much easier to do that and still try to sneak into the tournament with the second wild card. Adding more playoff spots would only encourage that behavior, not discourage it.
