Been Wanting to Post This For A Couple of Days...
So many ligament and tendon tears. I asked my father-in-law, who is a professional trainer for MLB, why there seems to be rash of these lately. His answer was surprising and it was clear that this had been on his mind a lot lately.
He said lots of teams are veering away from traditional sports medicine into more experimental/cutting edge areas/firms. These teams are firing their old trainers
(just like the Golden State Warriors did after winning a freakin' title) and bringing in new sports medicine guys. These guys are in the muscle-building business (bigger, faster, stronger for a new generation).
But do you know what doesn't grow? Ligaments and tendons. As the muscles connected to them get stronger, they place more strain on them and cause them to eventually rupture or tear easier.
He doesn't think the athletes are to blame for failing to prepare their bodies. It's the protocol. He thinks it is ownership, who are being wooed by these witch doctors that come in and promise amazing speed and strength progress in their players. What they omit, however, is the increase in injuries. Teams haven't caught on to this yet, but the training community is starting to sound the alarm. So far, they're concerns are being dismissed as self-serving.
I guess we will see if the trend continues or if there blow back eventually.
